Does anyone knwo much of this antenna? For the price it looks like a deal. Same antenna as the Maco V5/8. It will come with the Maco instructions, unless something has changed that I don't know of it the past few years!

Well thats good to hear. I guess the only difference is the price. Im planning on installing the 58 here and take my A 99 and install it at my G/Fs place so she can have a radio to talk on.

I was reading somwhere today that the workingman was made overseas and they were copying the Maco instructions and putting them in the box. Apparently this was the response from Maco and they were not so keen on it.

I did some digging and I came up with the link where I read that. www.cbtricks.com/forum/index.php?topic=2844.0I found R&L electronics have the Maco for 79.95. I was looking for an omni for my dad. I have a triband I could give him but then we would have to get crazy with a tower and rotor. Plus he may not use it all that much.

I have bought and sold both of these antennas. They are the same, the only difference was the name on the box. Do what you feel is best!
* Side note... Bioman here on the forum runs the Workman and has for the past few years. You might want to PM him and ask his thoughts! *

Well i just got it today. The directions are the same as Macos. the only difference is the wording. workman calls the V 58 the "Space ranger base".

It sounds kinda retro early 1960s. I think there was an antenna company back then called "Space raider". Pretty cool to me! One thing i noticed right away about this antenna was how clean the parts look. No burrs anywere to be found and all the parts fit tight.

The W-58 goes together faster and with ease and no time lost in filing and deburing parts,as with the MACO.Had one moved up to a Siro 827 big diff for me any way.Good luck with your W-58 .

I just bought and put together the Maco V58 but never encountered any of the problems mentioned above . Went together great. I have heard great reports about the Workman.

If you tune more than one antenna, the MFJ will save both your sanity and your hair.

I have one but my ex has it at her place. I have the w 58 up now and im talking on it. It has great ears and double the transmit over my A 99. Im keeping the A 99 though as a spare.

Always smart to keep a spare antenna! You should see if you could get that analyzer back.

I put the A 99 back up today on a 30' pole hooked to the fence. I have it hooked to my President Madison and the W 58 and the Astrobeam are hooked to my other set up. I like the A 99 but its just a 1/2 wave antenna and the M 58 is a 5/8 wave. I measured out the lenth of the w 5/8 and it is over 21 foot long so does this make it a true 5/8 wave?

Ya, a 5/8 wave antenna is about 22 foot long at CB frequencies.

I just was curious as i have read a lot of naysayers that have said its not a true 5/8 wave. Im very pleased with it so far. The ears on this antenna are up there with my old avanti sigma 5/8 wave(sigma 2) which is one of the best antennas ive ever owned. IMHO id rate the W 58 a dead tie with my Sigma 2 performance wise. The SWRS are almost flat across all 40. It is more of an antenna and plus some compared to my A 99.

How it performs is everything.

Oh nice... It's about time you put up some aluminum and steered away from the A99, IMAX-2000 crowd... I know it was all about safety back in the late 70's early 80's and beyond, but they sure sold a pile of antenna's that were not near as good as the old 5/8 GP's were...

The A 99 was ok because i was in a pinch to get something up in a hurry. Its good for a cheap quick antenna but for performance guys like me its not quite good enough. The A 99 is still up but i use it on a radio i dont talk on much. The next thing to do is to get my moonraker 4 back up and take the Astrobeam down. I miss the dual polarity.

I got my W58 and the ground planes wont go 4" into eachother and the top 2 sections are the same way. I tried to jam them together as far as I could......anyone else notice that?

I had the exact same problem. I just put them in as far as i could get them and then cut off the remaining tubing to equal out the measurements.

Grumpy's right they are the same and both are copy's of the Wilson Ground Plane (no suprize since Maco bought out Wilson)that in itself is a copy of the Ithaca ground plane of the early 60's.......Now all you need is a CO PHASER CONTOL BOX from Hy Gain..1960's and you can get directional gain with two Ground Planes set 18 feet apart ... ...Just like the good old days...What I would do for a nice fresh Hy Gain Model 525....
