Hmmm. Most of mine end up as lab rats for horrible, disfiguring experiments (like the one below). On the other hand, there's always the risk that some of these will end up as (gasp) products. Not this week, though.

I heard about one, but never found a link to look at it. I asked if anybody knew the serial number, but no replies. A couple of folks on the Browning Labs Inc forum mentioned "hack jobs", where the tube guts get trashed, and a mobile radio installed inside a Browning transmitter. That's why I only use pics with NON-40 channel numbers showing. That's a trick the "40-channel mobile" hardware can't deliver. I HAVE seen a few Mark IV transmitters done that way by a guy that used to be in Cincinnatti, but last I heard he was in a nursing home. Reportedly "Doc" did this to a fair number of Mark IV radios. He had one other really bad habit. He didn't like those "stinky little metal tubes" in the receiver. He would hacksaw that section from the receiver front-end PC board and install a socket with a glass tube for the receiver front end. Go figure. If you see one of those, don't offer more than the cabinet ALONE is worth.

Let's sea, I really like my Brownings. I have two MarkIII's & a MarkIV. Have owned two of these since new. I also have a Teaberry model T and a Robyn 240D. As you can tell I like the older tube equipment. Grumpy thanx so much for this board, I love it.

Welcome to the forum unit 589
There are a few Tram owners here on the forum, but I wish we had more!
I once had a Tram Titan back in the 80's, great radio
The audio on those Trams are hard to beat, they have a sound all of their own!!!

OK! I run a wacked out series II Browning Eagle. The transmitter now has a mic gain control and is tuned by a Glen VFO and slider kit. The receiver is flip-flopped to go below channel one. I have a rare Demco Travelier tube type mobile that sets here staring me in the face. All my playthings.

I to am a proud Browning owner. I've got a set of Mark III's. the thing thats differnt about mine is that the upper and lower channels are are'nt like alot of others, ai don't have a vfo, I've got some kind of crysal set up. as you can tell I'm not a tech. All I know is that these birds will talk with almost any other radios I have had, am or sideband. On sideband there is very little drift. And when you tie them to a Varmint XL1000 theres no telling how far they will talk. The antenna I use is a Moonracker 4, and that helps out to. But the heart of my system is the birds, I love them. ;D ;D ;D

Hey Boxcar, Your Varmint should really make the old bird sing! I use a Nitro 300 with my Series II Eagle. No room for a beam though. If you can get below channel one give me a shout on 26.925 Late nights weekends.

I just aquired a set of MK III 's in fair condition (not the SSB) model. Anybody have any ideas of how I can get an read as to what vintage they are ? Serial numbers are: Xmiter =821475 and Receiver = 442434. If anybody has some info or knows where to look, I'd be most grateful. I'm just getting back into radios after a long absence, and needed a forum to read/learn from. Looks like I'm home

Curly, Welcome to the forum! This is just an observation of mine; The early Mark III receivers had a light colored speaker grille (like a Mark II and Golden Eagle), and a knob that says MAN XTAL1 XTAL2. The next version I notice (which seems to be about 1974 or 75) has a darker speaker grille, MAN XTAL1 XTAL2. The later version (late 1976-77) has a darker speaker grille, and says MAN HF XTL.
Maybe Glenn (browninglabsinc) can elaborate on that dateline.
Another way to get some kind of idea is check the date code on the solder in crystals in the bottom.

HI Dan, Thanks for the info, I'm on a little trip to Florida so when I get home ( after New Years) I'll look them over. It seems like mine are the earlier of the bunch according to your discription. Like me, older the better Thanks a bunch Curly

Good Day, picked up a browning r-27 and s-23 at a yard sale. payed a $35.00. It was missing some tubes but I had them in my closet. it came with a A-99 and a D-104 mic. the lettering on the r-27 have worn off and the meter does not work.It works better than all my other radios. Any info on how to restore the lettering and front grill paint . would like it to look as good as it works. GREAT forum!!!!

Hello bud45640, welcome to
You didn't buy that radio, you stole it at $35 ;D
There is no set paint for the Browning radio, best bet is to go to your local paint shop and tried to get it matched up as close as you can. As for the lettering get in touch with Glenn at Browning Labs, I think he may know of some place that may be able to help you with that! Just click on where is says moderators on this section, you will see BrowningLabsInc as one of the moderators of this section. You will see where his email address is and you can send him a email. I will tell you now that it will take some time for him to get back to you as his mother is ill and in the hospital at this time. He will get back to you A.S.A.P.
I own a R27/S23 and love it . I hope you will be able to find all you need to restore it, they are one fine talking radio!
Take care and if you need help finding anything please post it here and I am sure that someone here on the forum will be able to guide you in the right direction!
