I would have thought the Regency Imperial would work great with a unamplified D-104 G stand or UG-8. But seems like it has a hum on the transmit audio with the unamplified mic. Also the Astatic wiring guide has it listed as Hi-z amplified microphone only. Please help a rookie out with this question. Thanks

I have a copy of the Astatic mic wiring manual and I've found wrong information in it on rare occasions, I believe this to be an example of that and you're right, that's what's listed for the Imperial. I bought an Imperial new and used an unamplified D-104 G stand with it. An amplified mic will work but you should be able to easily get 80 to 100% modulation with the G stand. I'm not sure why you're getting the hum, could be that the mic isn't wired right or there's something wrong with the mic's shielding or even a faulty modulation tube. I'm at a loss for an explanation. Try reversing the power plug in the outlet to change the polarity, I don't think that the AC plugs on the Imperial were polarized so it can fit two ways. There may be a grounding problem in the radio somewhere. Have you tried another unamplified mic like a stock hand mic? Have you tried an amplified mic? If so, did the hum go away? Power mics weren't even that popular in that radio's heyday and it should run fine with a G stand. I would look for a shielding problem or a grounding problem and check the modulation tube(s). I'm not sure if that radio has push/pull modulation or not. That problem is really strange and I don't know what else to suggest. If you've only used an unamplified mic the hum could be coming from bad filter capacitors or something else in the power supply. I wish I could help you more. You could try and find out if there's a listing for a Turner 454X, they are unamplified crystal mics like the G stand. One of the adjustments on the right side of the radio is the modulation level, there might be a problem there.

Thanks for your reply Tombstone. I have used the stock Turner hand mic. that came with the radio when new, which works quite well no hum but bassy audio. I have used a Turner plus two with great results clear and very loud audio. Currently I have a Astatic golden eagle wired to it, that looks really good but performance wise is about so so. The radio is bone stock with original filter caps, all tubes are original and test over 90 percent. It is likely the G stand I tried possibly had a bad element or was wired wrong. I never went that route when I looked up the wiring info for the radio from Astatic I went with the amplified D 104. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Thanks again for your time and knowledge.

Oh I should say something about the performance of the radio. It dead keys around one and three quarter watts and swings around eight to nine watts which is I think pretty much in the ball park for DSBRC. Also has a very pleasant tube recieve easy to listen to. Thanks for the help.

Just a note; I use a Golden Eagle on my Imperial, an amplified TUG-9 on my Imperial II, no issues and sound great. I do keep the mike gain cut way back. Even so they are loud and clean w/ 100%+ modulation.
