I would have to say my Cobra 2000, smoothest radio I ever ran. I bought it new when they first came out and had it stolen out of my van when I moved to Florida. The whole thing was strange. They took the 2000 and my Shure SM58 vocal mic. They left my D-104 and Ludwig drum set and Zildjian cymbals that were in the van alone. If the person that took it happens to read this I hope you got electrocuted on it!

I've always loved the ROC Cobra 29s. Best radios I've ever owned. I guess the Galaxy 88 and 99s are my favorite exports.

I guess for a base it would be my Uniden Washington. Always had good reports with that radio. As far as mobile I think it would be my Uniden Grantxl.

For Sideband use, I have been having good luck with the Galaxy DX 2547 base CB radio. Easy modification and good modulation. Nice radio for a current model.
For mobile use (sideband again) I have really liked the Magnum 257 radios. The newest offering with the blue display made it even better, with a simpler mod and the radio now remembers the last freq you were on when last turned off. Before, it would default back to 10 meter mode when turned on.
Of course, for straight 40 channel CB, AM or SSB, the Uniden Grant is a winner. Too bad it is no longer made.

For SSB my CPI CP 2000 is one fantastic performer. AM, I like my Regency Imperial and Tram Titan IV. Mobile I'l go with the ever popular Uniden Grant, and for export I like my Prez Jackson that I have had base or moble for over 20 years now. Damn I am getting old when an export is getting to be classic.

Love my Trams for sure, and wouldnt give up my Yaesu, but for everyday use I sure have taken a liking to my RCI-2995 for base and my RCI-2970 for mobile.... for sure ease of use and I can go wherever I want to go ! Never thought I would like a transistor rig so much, but I do ! This keeps the wear and tear off the Trams, but I run them at least once a week and everyone knows when I'm on the Tram even if I give it a bit of heat to keep the output like the RCI, they can tell the difference in audio when I'm on the Trams ! I posted earlier that my Cobra 2000 is the smoothest radio I've ever run and the operation is easy especially on sideband but the locals say that all of my Brownings sound the best of anything else I've got. I prefer my Browning Mark III but it's had so many modifications that it's a bear to operate especially on sideband. It's not a beginner's radio.

My best base is the Browning Golden Eagle Mark One. I've had it for many years. It is rusty & scratched up with no screws in the cabinets (easy access tubes, xtals).
My best mobile is an export Grant. ..My wife's Cobra 25 with S- expo kit also does a nice job.

Another old moldy post brought back from the precipice of oblivion. But hey, it's a great question and one that, as usual, I can't answer simply. I've played with so many radios that they're becoming all a blur. But there are a few standouts. For the title of best radio, it's a close 3 way race between my Tram D201, Browning MkIII, and Hy-Gain 623. The Browning has the coolness factor, the Tram has the best transmit audio, and the Hy-Gain has audio plus the best S-meter of any CB I've ever played with.
Honorable mention goes to: Royce 640 - Just darn good looking and has great audio for a solid state rig.
Cobra 139XLR - That 858 board just can't be beat if you're a mad scientist looking to experiment. Can be made to scream, if that's what you're into.
Lafayette Comstat 25 - my first base radio, and like a Timex watch, it takes a lickin' and just keeps tickin', 40 years later.
Realistic TRC-451 - Great receiver, low noise floor, good audio quality, and has been powered up 24/7 for over a year feeding my streaming audio server, with nary a hiccup.

I have had limited experience with radio usage. I kind of stick to one for a while. I have had virtually no experience with classics like the Trams 201, Browning Golden Eagle, and Cobra 2000. So, I have taken some old 1970's non-collectable rigs and restored them.
My current main CB is a Realistic TRC-455. Purchased broken on ebay for $27 shipped. After restoration and repair, the radio shines. The transmit audio gets very good reviews. But where the radio shines is in its receive audio. The thing sounds fanstastic. If it has one glitch it that adjacent channel rejection is average, but living in the sticks nullifies that problem. I cannot get over the great sound this has thru the speakers. I don't know what audio chip it uses, but it is great.
I have used a Unident Grant LT (same as Grant XL), and that is pretty good, Great on SSB. Might not be as loud as a Galaxy, but blow Galaxy away in frequency stability.
I have a RCA Co-Pilot base, with great receive audio, but terrible transmit audio. I get good reports with the limiter clipped, but with the limiter still in, and the mod ajusted to 100% on a scope. I get terrible reports. I had not choice but to clip it (argh!)
Had a Galaxy 949 in my car. Tremendous AM transmit performance and receive, but drifted like an unanchored boat. Upon discovering the CB forums, I have realized that the drift is common for RCI/Galaxy radios. I found this unacceptable for the prices they charge, and now stay away. I do not get the people that swear by these radios.
In the car a have a Uniden HR-2510. Superb performer. Receive audio is a bit to bassy, and wish it had a tone control to turn it down a bit. Otherwise it is superb.

This reminds me of "uncle Al" back in the 70's. He worked 2nd shift and was around during the day. He used to woo the "desperate housewives" who owned the channels during the day when the kids were at school and the men normally worked. He got into a few close calls playing that game. Who needs TV when the drama was right here on CB radio.......

You know I got to thinking about "What is the best radio I ever used.I listed three of my radio's on Nov 20. But I'd have to list all my radio's under this heading, If not I would not have bought them 1 Sonar FS-23 2 Palomar Skipper 71b complete set.! 3 Dak ix 4 Dak x 5 Tram D300 6 Galaxy 2547 I still have all but the Palomar. I didn't have the test equipment then as I do now, and it needed attention all the time. Merry Xmas everyone Livewire

My favorite base and mobile was a Archer Knight Kit (don't remember model number) 23 channel tube set I bought at a pawn shop in San Diego CA while in Navy in late 60's. I used it as a base for awhile and then wrote Archer and found out it could be wired for 12v so put it in my 67 Mustang fastback with 102" whip and that thing rocked. It was big but I was able to mount it under the dash. I now use a Doc tuned Uniden HR2600 for base and Uniden PC68Elite for mobile.

Theres 2 bases I had best luck with, and one them is an old tube type. For straight AM talking I prefer a Johnson Messenger 223 with a Turner +2.If I want to talk sideband, I go with a Cobra 139XLR.For a mobile,I like the Cobra 132XLR or Johnson Viking 4740.I cannot comment on any Export models as Ive never owned one.I might break down and get another Tram. Those things are like wives, high maintainence

I don't know, Butcherman, but I believe that Archer was a Radio Shack model, I don't think that they made CB radio kits. I think that your radio was an Allied Knight, but.........too long ago for memory. As far as the best radio that I've used, not counting HAM rigs, I'd normally say it was a Browning Mark II, only because of the great receive due to the Collins mechanical filter. That's until I aquired a Galaxy DX2527. Hard to believe coming from a Browning lover, but it's online along with a couple of my other radios and the transmit quality is great. It's quite sensitive and seems to have excellent adjacent channel rejection. Maybe the transmit is due to the Turner Plus Three. The radio barks and doesn't drift. Works fine on sideband too. The only thing about it that I don't care for is all of the noise toys which I keep turned off. Really, considering all of the radios that I've used since 1965 it's hard to say, truthfully. I have a Cobra 2000 online also and it ranks in there. Then there's my Browning Mark III. I can identify with the earlier post about the Palomar radios needing constant attention. Sounds the same as every Demco Satelite radio owner I've talked to. That's one rig I've not owned but they sound great. I need to put a Tram D201 in there too. As I type this I realize now that this is a very difficult question to answer and I'm now totally baffled, ha, ha!

BEST Base CB Radio for me is my DAK Mark X.BIG,MEAN,LOUD AUDIO like NONE before or after. It really is an AUDIO MONSTER.I have a BROWNING EAGLE MK III & a MK IVA & the DAK Mark X is louder than either of them. The MK IVA is a close 2nd.The receiver is a bit better on the MK IVA but not by much. The MK IVA like all Golden Eagles is a terrible SSB radio so the DAK again wins.Best mobile was an old TRAM D64. Great transmit audio & quietest receiver of any CB Base or Mobile I have ever owned or used.I know so many have given the poor mouth bout the DAK Mark X but I can only speak about the one I own.It has ZERO mods of any kind other than being peaked & tuned. It's also the most Beautiful Base CB ever built as well.I love the MK IVA looks as well but the DAK is pure SWEET "EYE CANDY" no matter what is sitting on a shelf with it when it's turned on nothing comes closeto those Four Big Meters all lit up & that beautiful brussed aluminum case.I don't care that it's a big box with a little radio inside it's mine & it's SWEET.I run ClearSpeech DSP units with all of my CB's so there is almost Zero noise an AM or SSB.Really lets the sensitive receivers shine & pull out those weak signals.
