Nice to hear the locals in the Video Gate getting over the skip that was present. I was running a classic Cobra 138 XLR CB radio with a Syncron MP-7000RB desk mic. The radio has excellent receive that's easily tailored using the voice lock, RF gain and tone controls. The AM audio output quality isn't too shabby either

This weeks 'Gate....Barker & Williamson 5100B tx and Hallicrafters R-274D rx I don't know if it was the Hallicrafters or the latest mods that I did to the Galaxy, but man that thing sounds good. I think I actually like the way the Echomax mic sounds on it, once I pulled the 2.5 Khz down on the EQ. Looks like there's some more experimenting to do....... And like I promised Sparky, I'll document all my changes and post them up here in the "hi-fi" section.

As always, thanks for the gate Spitfire. I see some cooling fans top of your Imperial. I'll do the same thing on some of my tube rigs. Just enough airflow to evacuate excess heat and still keep the glowing glass warm I was running an SBE Console II on April 2nd or as Skeeter calls it...the "Brady radio" due to it's '70's generic mundane Brady Bunch look.

For CCR April 9th, I worked a Spark-O-Matic 5100 40 Channel Base Station. It has good receive and the RF Local/ DX switch does a great job of reducing the skip when it's heavy. These were made in Korea. It uses a lC7110 PLL chip in a "sardine can" metal box and doesn't look like the main board doubled as a mobile radio due to several of the large metal boxes located on it. Not much info out there about them so I have no manual or schematic for it yet. It supposedly has an identical twin called a LLoyds 501? I acquired this rig from local operator Block Head (thanks!)I love how these radios look like a vintage stereo receiver.

With the absence of F layer skip, it was a pleasant laid back local affair. Some E skip does appear near the end. Metrotek Mustang II.

Another good turn out for CRR 5/14!
Started out with a "slant face" Sears Road Talker 40 SSB base/mobile, then switched to a JC Penny 2742 SSB mobile. There was some skip noise, but the locals came through loud and clear.
I did hear one of the Carolina's come in but didn't hear Night Ranger come back when I shouted breaker...

I had my Midland 13-898B running for the first half, and a Lafayette Telsat SSB-50a for the second half. D-104 was the mic of choice for both last night. Attachments:

Dig that Telsat 50a It sounds really nice. I just pulled a Telsat 750 23 channel AM rig outta a box-O-stuff. It's got that 5 pin din mic jack but appears to differ in wiring from the Radio Shack/ Sears rigs. I haven't opened it up yet to see who's main board it has in it.

If it's a later model, it may even be a PLL (02A) chassis. And yes, the 5 pin DIN wiring is not the same as Radio Shack. Bummer

I would have put the 750 on CRR last week but I tried to get it to adapt to a 4 wire Cobra mic but no-go so far. Not sure why other than it looks like the mic audio shield and switch common are not shared, so maybe only a 6 wire (5 wire) mic would work?? Weird. There was no 750 schematic on CB Tricks but there was a 740 which I assumed was similar since they look almost identical.

You have to be careful with those Cybernet chassis with 4 wire base mics. The D104's and the Turner base mics all short the mic audio (white) to the shield on receive and that plays hell with those Cybernet boards because the mic audio goes directly to the audio amp and it causes a nasty squeal in the speaker. 6 wire versions do not do this, and they will work ok. Also 4 wire mobile mics (Turners anyway) do not short the audio to ground and they will work ok.

Thanks Sandbagger for the reply on the mic wiring and that squeal is exactly what I got when I tried a standard 4 wire mic to the 5 wire 750 radio. I ran the Spark-O-Matic 5100 base last week instead since it was already on the bench. I got on the SNUBWAP last night around 8:40 Pm but couldn't reach anyone. Oh well everyone must have been in there earlier or were out partying like we were

But we're getting into the time of the year where it stays light longer and people stay outside doing "stuff". So attendance for the SNUBWAP may get a bit thin...

CRR for 6/11/14 was totally skip filled (20+ over) So much so that really only a few of the locals could get in. Don't know if any forum DX members could hear us or not? It got so loud that I jumped out a few times For those that were in there, I was running Grumpy's ol' Cobra 138 XLR.
