There are so many different factors that come into play. What are you looking to do? Talk to locals within 20 miles ? Skip ? Locals more than 20 miles? Base to mobile ? Base to base ?
Just to give you an idea of what I am talking about. When I was a kid in the early 80s we had a tech in NH named Roger who owned and operated Nashua communications. I was in the market for a base antenna. I asked him a question. What is the best base antenna?
Now I want you to vision Doc Brown from Back To the Future answering this question.
Roger was a techs tech. He was eccentric , Some would say nuts , some would say too smart , He was a nice nice guy and one heck of a radio man. He was a hello and goodbye to the regular person but if you could get him to talk to you he was unstoppable.
He proceeded to grab a big piece of paper and a pen. He started to draw circles , lines , Waves , Numbers , while all the time my minds was spinning , All I asked was What the best antenna was ??
He explained or at least tried to explain to my jelly brain why that was an extremely hard question and why there was no answer.
He then started to show me on the diagram he was drawing that several different factors would make each and every antenna better or worse for different scenarios.
I ended up saying to him once my mind was blasted and I could absorb no more , Just give me a base antenna that is not to big and performs well in a wide range of conditions.
He sold me my Astroplane. I still have it and love it.
Now with that said, I have tried many base antennas back around that time. All mounted on the same mount in the same spot. Some larger antennas were worse than my 100" steel whip local but were better long distance. Some smaller antennas were better long distance than larger ones ,
I found a wire hanging from a tree with my antenna tuner did better for skip than the .064 wave I had at the time on a switch box. But the wire was junk for local.
So , If you buy either the Maco or HG chances are you will see little difference between the 2 because they are a similar type of antenna.
But there is no answer to which is the best. Or which will perform better without being Doc Brown and having a background in antenna design and knowing the exact use and conditions for each transmission.
10000 Jigawatts. Do you know what this means Marty?
