I wish.... But I do get to play with it from time to time.This is one of the toys I get to play with at work. General Motors Electromotive Division 645 V-20 2 stroke diesel. Running a 3 megawatt out put generator for peak shaving. Also in the video is our "blackstart" generator diesel, not running. The GM is running at idle just above 425 rpm. Full load speed is 925 rpm. I was running it just to warm it up and circulate new engine oil to ensure the correct level. It was 3:00 in the morning so I could not run it all the way up.

That would make one heck of a backup generator for your house. Yes it would! Never worry about enough power. Although it uses around 100 gallons an hour. The day tank for it is 10,000 gallons. I don't think I could afford to run it for long.

I don't think I could afford to run it for long. And I was thinking the 350kW Kohler with a V8 Detroit I have at work was thirsty. The day tank on it is only 100 gallons. Hopefully that one does not comsume oil like the Detroit does.

Whats the winter time temp in that room?? And was that a 350 CID for a starter LOL...!!!

The winter time temp in the room is about the same as it would be outside. The radiator fan (big a$$ fan) is at one end, as the engine runs it draws outside air right through the room at hurricane velocities. As far as oil consumption, it is a 2 stroke diesel and designed to consume oil while running. In 8 hours run time approxamately 1000 gallons of fuel is used and about 50 gallons of engine oil, about one 55 gallon drum. It is over 3000 SHP and 3 megawatt output @ 2400 volts. To start the engine, it uses compressed air @ 200 PSI (2 big air flasks) to turn a pair of air motors on the flywheel. If we have no power, there is a 6 cylinder diesel 250kw gen-set to provide power for starting.

It was so cold out here in PA this AM (-2F) that the price of electric on the grid was so high, that it pays to have all of our generators running, even the less efficient 1965 vintage GM EMD 645 V20 2 stroke diesel 3000 watt generator. With the new EPA restrictions on this old gal I didn't know if I would ever be able to get this set of video's, pre-start,start-up and run up to full load and synchronize to the grid. Spitfire 441

It was so cold out here in PA this AM (-2F) that the price of electric on the grid was so high, that it pays to have all of our generators running, even the less efficient 1965 vintage GM EMD 645 V20 2 stroke diesel 3000 watt generator. With the new EPA restrictions on this old gal I didn't know if I would ever be able to get this set of video's, pre-start,start-up and run up to full load and synchronize to the grid. Spitfire 441 Love that run-up. Sounds like a loco running at notch 8 pulling a load uphill.

We use 3 freight-train engines on a typical oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Two of them power the oil rig, and one of them is used to spin the drill pipe and actually drill the well. If you have expertise with these things, you might want to consider working in the oil biz, 441. On a 14-days-on and 14-days-off shift (working 6 months out of the year), you could easily make $100K a year, no problem. 73, Randy AB5NI
