"For some reason those two base radios always reminded me of the chrome fender on a 1970s automobile. Night Ranger" That's right.... Is that a Dodge Dart? I use to have one of those when I was about 21, and yes I had a CB in it with a trunk mount antenna. I think I alternated between a Royce 609 and a 23 channel Midland 13-882b. I also used my Realistic TRC-451 sometimes when I was away at college, but the TRC-451 was mostly my base radio. Night Ranger

Throw in a beat up Elkin amp and you'd have it made...... In North Carolina and South Carolina the Elkin amplifiers were definitely the redneck amplifier of choice in the 1970s and 1980s. The eight tube Elkin and the twelve tube Elkin were the stuff of redneck trailer park dreams. Night Ranger The Elkin factory: I've seen that picture before. Amusing. I always thought the Elkin amplifiers were kind of ugly, but they were the holy grail of the 1970s and 1980s "swing" crowd. Panama Red's six tube Elkin sounded decent, but I've heard some that sounded terrible when the dead key was set too low. When an amp like that was 20 or 30 miles away they would dead key nothing and swing S5 or S6. The audio was pretty scratchy and distorted when all you could hear was the swing. Several of the locals had trouble with feedback when the amp was on. In the case of a local CB'er named "Simple Man" you could hear the squeal coming out of the tubes in the amp. I heard it first hand when I was over at his place....And yes....he was an unemployed redneck CB'er living in a trailer park with an RCI-2950, a four or six tube Elkin on an Antron 99 whose CB handle was named after a Lynyrd Skynyrd song. No need to make that stuff up. I saw it myself. Nice guy, but a bit of a pot head. I don't remember if his RCI-2950 was running on a car battery on the floor with a battery charger hooked up, but it would not surprise me. Night Ranger

Night Ranger That's one thing that always annoyed me about the "extreme swing" crowd. 5 or 6 (or more) S units of swing does NOT sound good. I mean, if they want that kind of swing, then run SSB. The only way they can get that much swing (30db?) out of a radio that has a max of between a 4:1 and 8:1 peak:carrier ratio is to use a class C amp and run the carrier drive level down to the point just above cutoff. Sure it'll swing like wild, but it's severely distorted and sounds raspy. It also drives noise blanker circuits crazy. Some of the more notorious "swingers" up this way would be barely understandable until I turned off the blanker. All of that splatter was actually triggering the noise gate and chopping up the signal. Based on what you've stated, I can only assume that the Elkin was a class C amp. No wonder they splatter. But I'm sure they're no worse than today's competition class C pill boxes by Dave Made, X-force, Fat Boy et al.
