I've joined this forum but now realise it's specific for CB radio. However I still hope I can get some help on a mystery that's been bugging me for a few days.
I have a small digital radio alarm clock by the side of my bed which I listen to while reading. When I've finished reading I hit the snooze button to turn off the radio, and when I do I can hear a very faint and distant musical jingle (it's a short burst of a classical piece but I can't think what). The sound appears to be coming from another room, but only ever happens as soon as I hit snooze on the radio.
I live above a shop, and although I've never heard their door chime, is it possible that pressing snooze on my radio triggers the shop's door chime?

Yes, we are primarily radio operators (both CB and some hams), but that doesn't mean that we don't enjoy a little electronic mystery from time to time. What you've described is really strange. Basic clock radios should not be involved in any sort of transmitting action, that could trigger some other device. But you did say it was a "digital" radio. So for all I know it could be an NSA approved WIFI enabled device that gets the time from the internet, so it might be piggybacking on the shop's network and somehow causing something to chime. I know I'm picking at straws here. But if you could give us a make and model of the radio, we could do a little research and find out what it's capable of doing.

Are you listening to a digital or analog broadcast? Normally there will be an indicator light that shows the signal is digital. And does it do this when tuned to another station? HDFM xmtrs normally broadcast two or three programs at the same time. An analog signal and either one or two digital signals. Just wondering if it might be picking up something from one of them......especially if you are listening to NPR or an educational broadcasting station.

Sorry, I think I misled you when I said digital radio. It's not a DAB or anything, just a cheap radio alarm clock with a digital clock display. Anyway, last night I discovered it's not the radio triggering the chime. It's my bedside lamp!! I thought it was the radio because I turn off my lamp and then my radio, but I paid more attention last night and discovered it's my lamp. I turned it on and off twice just to confirm, and sure enough, every time I turn off the lamp, the faint jingle/chime starts up its little tune somewhere.

What's the deal with this lamp? is it an X10 or other electronically controllable device?

You will not hear it if you follow proper PPE guidelines for radio interference...

Nope, just a little old angle lamp with a rocker switch half way along the power cord. I suppose the next step is to pop into the shop and see if they ctually have a door chime that plays this little jingle i keep hearing. At least then I've established that's where it IS coming from.

Well, then if all you have is an incandescent desk lamp with a simple on-off switch, I'm left with the theory that the door chime is sensitive to spikes in the power line, like what might occur when you make or break the connection on your lamp switch. But if that is the case, I'd think a whole host of other appliances would do the same thing, which would drive the shop crazy with all the false chimes. Unless your lamp in wired into the same circuit as the chime, and nothing else is there.

Well Sandbagger , I think that's as plausible an answer as I'm ever likely to get on this one. Thank you. Kneebiter, when I was in my teens my brother had a CB that I used to use all the time. My handle was Emu, but being from the UK I suspect a lot of the jargon we used would be totally alien to you US truckers. Let's see what I can remember. The pick-up channel was 14, and we used to say, "One-four for a copy. One-four for a copy." To which someone would reply, "One-four pick a window." Then I'd say, "Channel (whatever)" and we'd both go to there and start chatting. If you wanted to join in on a conversation or ask a question, you'd say, "Emu on the side, on the side". To which one of them would reply, "On the side, come in." and you'd ask your question. What else was there? "Do you want an eyeball?" (would you like to meet up in person?). "What's your local?" (Where do you live?) "What am I pushing?" (What's the needle reading on the squelch dial?) "Knock it up/down one" (Change the channel) That's all I remember

Just on an outside chance.............does the lamp have a non-polarized plug on it? If so turn it over and see if that cures your problem.
