They're closing remaining stores. Maybe someone will by the name and do something online only. Man, that is depressing. That place had such eye candy when I was a kid. I always looked at their CB radios and walkie talkies.

I always lood at their CB radios and walkie talkies. I guess Sprint wasn't up to the task. Damn shame. Radio Shack was a big part of my hobby from early on. Another victim of modern technology.....

Early last week (or maybe late in the previous week) when it was first announced an "All Sales Final - NO RETURNS" sign went up on the door of the local RS. Then last Friday they had a big clearance sale sign in the front window stating, I believe 30-60% off. Might head over at lunch today to see if anything catches my eye.

They will keep two stores open in Louisville, both out in the 'burbs. The one near me will be gone at the end of March.

The local Shack has 90% everything in their component drawers, what's left of it anyway. Grabbed a bunch of quick connectors today for $.25 and $.30 per pack. And a replacement soldering iron tip for $2.50.

Had to run over to the Pottstown Walmart to pick up some oil, so while I was there, I figured I'd stop in at the Radio Shack and see what was left. Not much......... But I did manage to get a bunch of light bulbs including the 12V bayonet types to replace the burned out ones in the "Spew Radio" Royce 640. I also got a bunch of cordless phone rechargeable batteries so now all my phones work again. I also picked up a coupe of other batteries and a digital multimeter. I paid $20 for the entire lot. Sweet. But it really saddens me to see RS go. Radio Shack was never far away from my very first days in electronic experimentation and CB radio. From their project kits, to soldering supplies, to free battery of the month cards, to "lifetime" guaranteed tubes, to endless dog eared catalogs, it had to be one of my most favorite stores back in the 70's. Yes, RS of late was not the same as it once was. But there was some connection to the past there. And now it's about to join Lafayette (another of my once favorites) in the annals of history. Rats.

Both Radio shack here in town closed down I went and bought a few hands full of components and a couple of jumper coaxes, talked to the guy in the store and he said only a few select stores were staying open.

Rat Shack has been closed down in my area for some time now, thought they all were. I worked there the fall and winter of 85, the Tandy computers were still pretty new. I remember a monochrome video screensaver of Santa Claus coming down the chimney, that everyone thought was so cool. The last several years going in there was a real disappointment, unless I was shopping for a phone.

It's about time they had the funeral because they died a long time ago.Cell phones, batteries,& remote controlled vehicles kept their doors open not radios for many of those last years. They left us some great products from all of those years & some of the best CB Radio's I have ever owned or still do.Great scanners & lots of other stuff.Their products will long outlive us all & before long nobody will even be around that was here when they were still around.I have a bunch of stuff in my Man Cave/Radio Shack that says,Realistic,Radio Shack,or Tandy Corporation on it & I will when I die. They made a lot of great memories in my life & I won't forget their contribution to my lifetime of radio fun. They were hands down better than so many others & that for sure includes MFJ.The brand is Dead but the products will be here for a long long time. {:>)

Heard from Gumby that the RS in New Holland,Pa is still open and will remain that way as it's interdependently owned. If I had to wager a guess the owner just bought up truck loads of NOS RS stuff and is keeping the RS name. So if you have-to-have some RS part, you may find it there: www.facebook.com/New-Holland-Radio-Shack-113879442021824/

Passed by the New Holland Radio Shack today and saw this.... There are some signs that the remains of Radio Shack may rise up from the ashes, like a Phoenix, and make a go of it again. It won't be the big Tandy corporation anymore, and most likely, the only thing that ties the "new" Radio Shack to the "old" is the name. But at least we may get to see it continue in some places for a big longer. I'm all for it. Now if only there was one close by.......

Why did it go out anyway. It was my second home. 321 In my opinion, it was mainly mismanagement. They lost thare roots and were at the end trying to compete in a market that was just too competitive, phones.

Why did it go out anyway. It was my second home. 321 Well, IMHO there were a couple of factors that led to RS's demise. One was the declining interest in electronic hardware and radio hobbyists. 2nd, the upper level management, in an effort to make up for the declining hobbyist market, tried to be something to everyone. From computers, to cell phones, to video, to toys. They tried to be a smaller version of "Best Buy", but they couldn't compete with the volume sales from the larger electronic box stores, and got beaten on price. And of course, internet sales put a big hurt on brick and mortar stores. Their business model just wasn't competitive in today's world. Shame.

I wish there would be one closer too, but I think of traveling to New Holland as an adventure I could easily make a day out of. Stop somewhere for a good old fashioned PA Dutch meal, pick up a shoo-fly pie at Achenbach's in Leola (which is hands down the best I ever had), swing into Shady Maple for a few things and then cruise the back roads back to "civilization". That said, after reading about the New Holland RS and it's owner, I would really like to get up there and patronize his business.
