I have recently purchased another Hygain 623 cb radio. I am using a D104/TUG8 mic. When I release the PTT button on the mic there is a very noticeable pop that comes through the speaker on the radio. The radio transmits and receives fine for the most part other than probably needing an alignment. I am also using an external speaker on this unit due to a failed internal speaker due to age. The external speaker has the same resistance of 3.2 ohms as the factory internal speaker if that has any relevance to the issue. I guess it could possibly be dirty contacts in the mic switch but I have not noticed this issue in any other of my radios I have used this mic on. This issue does not seems to be effecting operation, it is just very annoying hearing a quite loud pop every time I unkey the mic. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

It was quite "pop"ular (sorry couldn't resist... ohm, oh it's bad today )for older radios with relays in them to "pop" when returning from transmit to receive. Some radios were worse than others. Many had the pop amplified when using a larger external speaker. There really isn't a whole lot you could do about it. Some have tried placing capacitors across the relay contacts to suppress the voltage spike that typically causes the "pop" much like the condenser in an old automotive points ignition system. I have that exact model radio, but I'm still using the internal speaker and I never found the "pop" to be all that objectionable.

A part of me was thinking it was normal for some older radios but wasn't for sure. I say you are correct about the pop possibly being worse because of the different external speaker. I might try to see if I can play around with some caps to reduce the pop. As long as it isn't going to damage the radio I probably just deal with it. Thanks for the info.

Most Mics including the D104 switch both the Relay & Audio simultaneously. This can create a rather obnoxious POP when keying or unkeying the older Radios. You have to reshape the switch inside the G-Stand so the Mic keys the Relay prior to engaging the Audio in the Mic Switch contacts. Hope this helps.

I am going to try this. Thanks!
