My kind neighbor (Green Thumb) is moving and tossed a few CB related items my way. A Cobra 139 XLR, Cobra power desk mic, Turner Plus 3 desk mic and Cobra Coffin Mic. All well star dusted from years of storage in an attic. He still has the the Star Duster antenna in a tree. I noticed the top vertical section had separated from the lower section but was still there. I may take another look at it to see if it's worth taking down for re-use. Dusty, dust...

View AttachmentThe 139XLR is a nice radio. One of my favorite 40 channel chassis (858 PLL).

I thought you had one of these Sandbagger. Well I wiped of the exterior and vacuumed out the interior and she looks bone stock. The main board is really well populated and I didn't see any 10V caps present. Its really nice to see that almost every crystal has a trimmer cap nearby and the pre-driver & final have thermal tracking. Also dig those other familiar quality Uniden parts I spy. Have to throw some power to it later and see if she works.

What is a weak spot on these radios is a small blue 2.2uF Tantalum cap (C179). It sits on the B+ that feeds the driver and final. It has a tendency to short out, which might make you think the final is shorted out. When this happens, when you key up on AM, the relay will chatter. On SSB, you'll blow the fuse. Also, you need to be aware of the production date. There were some upgrades made to correct early issues in the final bias that would cause the final to blow. Check CBTricks, they have the factory tech bulletins that outline those changes. But only the oldest versions should need this.
