The post was 3 years old, so I wonder if this "concept" was ever productized. My first impression was "Wow that's a lot of work to go through, just to put a non-modifiable PLL radio on channels it's not supposed to be on". Not something that an average tech could install quickly so it will run up the $$$$ in shop time. The engineer/Tech side of me applauds the effort and it showcases just what can be done if one puts their mind to it. But the practical side of me says that it's probably easier and cheaper to just find an export or ham radio that already does all that, and enjoy the other radio the way it was designed. For this to have mass appeal, it would have to be fairly cheap, and be practically plug and play.

Hiya, Just signed up after finding this thread in a google search. That thread showed a very early prototype its gone to a proper pcb since then.
The latest one was done in my old Kraco SSB base radio last month, there is pics and a video of it on transmission1 in the modifications section under the subject "kraco". It works so far in a superstar export (to cure the drifting), a cobra 146 same innards as the realistic 451, and the kraco ex 23 channel rig.
Any questions welcome but nothing too technical, im a happy tinkerer but no tech so anything too involved ill have to ask the person who did the work.
They are hoping to be able to sell it as a kit when the design is finished but no idea of how long as its just a spare time project for them.

That's good to know. Consolidating everything onto one plug and play PC board would certainly make for a less involved install. The originator of the design had some pretty strict requirements that drove the complexity of the project. If it were me, and I was determined to put my TRC-451 out of band, I'd have simply subbed in another PLL chip, along with some ROM-coded address decoders to convert the BCD channel switch into binary coding for the PLL (Probably a MC145106) and went that route for a one-off. Probably much simpler. But there's certainly a lot of room in this hobby for all sorts of technical innovations. I'd like to see the finished product.

Asked the tech about your reply, they said thats what they did for the first version but it was too limited in how many radios it could be adapted into and would not improve the stability of drifty radios. Their idea is to have one board that fits anything from a 23 channel mid 70s radio onwards to current radios and would better the stability of the original circuits.
One thing we dont see much in oz are export radios if you want one new you have to buy it directly from overseas and take a chance that border protection dont pick it up at the mail center, there are not allowed to be commercially imported or sold here.
You are right about the strict requirements the tech has, everything has to be spot on. They normally only do business band two ways and microwave data radios, only doing the odd cb or ham radio for regular customers if they consider it an interesting spare time project.
