He got me started in this back in the mid-70s and this is the model of mobile he used for years in his truck.
A week or so ago I happened to be prowling on Ebay and saw several of them. I picked one and bought it and, in the same session, found somebody selling the Sams CB Photofact pages for it so I bought that too. Ordered the electrolytics today (13 of them in total) so just waiting for those to come in.
Every time I see one of these I think of him.... now I'll have one.

I also have memories of the Royce 1-600. I borrowed one from one of my early radio mentors for about a month when I was in-between radios in the late summer of 1974. I recently had one given to me (thanks again Night Ranger!), which brings back some of those old memories. It's not the world's best performing radio, but that's not what matters.

That radio reminds me of my courier classic 2 . Designed to put out 3 watts. All chrome and compact, base/mobile,heavy and well built. Fun little radio for our 23 chnnl. Wedsnedays. Sits side by side with my 29 classic chrome. 321

I have a question though......
This radio has a switch on the front panel that adds 8 channels JUST BELOW channel 1. They took out one pair of master oscillator crystals and rigged up a DPDT with the switches tacked to IT, and then wired to the holes in the PCB for the crystals. Switch down, you get 1 - 23. Switch up the first 8 positions on the dial are the 8 channels just below 26.965.
Would you leave it that way? Or put the two crystals back on the board and remove said mod?
If my thinking factors in at all.... I've never been much of an outbander... in fact... never! My real goal is to restore it so that it is working good the way it is designed. BUT....... this sounds like something my father in law would have done or at least wanted.... So....it it works well..... I might decide to leave it.
Here is a real question. The way the mod is implemented...it is running crystal output over wires....back to the PCB to solder in to the crystal lead holes. Will that much wire at that frequency cause frequency issues? Will it still be accurate or can that "detune" the crystals???
Waiting on the new electrolytics to come in..... Tap....... tap....... tap......

My thinking, at this stage in life, is similar to yours. I like my vintage radios to be as close to stock as possible. If I want "extra" channels, I have other radios capable of that. Although I have not operated on an out-of-band frequency in over 10 years now. There's really no need around my area. The legal channels are sparsely populated as it is. No need to go out of band to find a quiet channel. Whenever you add wires to crystals, you will change their frequency. How much depends on the installation. Usually it's not more than a KHz or so, which was not all that big of a deal back in the day.

Now.... the itch!!!!!!
I just got confirmation my caps are in......delivered this morning!!!!
I have to admit that I am sorely tempted to remove that mod. But I will need to find a way to plug the hole.
Mod removal is easy untack the wires from the pcb and clean the holes, remove the switch from the front panel, unsolder the crystals, identify the correct two, solder them back in their original holes on the PCB, "I'm outta there!"

Similar issue here with a beautiful jcpenny pinto, ssb 23chnnl mobile/base. Someone set it up to accept a vfo through the speaker jack on back of unit. A wire from there goes back to a removed crystal spot and soldered in place of the crystal. Not sure what else was done to create the mod and i dont have or desire a vfo, so it has to go

Darn the bad luck!!
The recap went fine. In related news..... I don't know how I have ever lived without having a decent temp regulated soldering/desoldering station. After using this.... I don't know how to act!!!!!!!!
We now return to your regular programming!!!!!!
Okay, so the cap change went smooth as buttah!!!!!!
Was I content? Hell to the no!
I went to remove the mod. Got the switch out, the wires untacked, the holes cleaned out, the two crystals freed up to go back in....but....
I could NOT make those crystal leads go in the holes on the PCB. I mean they were jammed up tight. On each crystal ONE leg was perfectly straight and the other leg was kind of bent crooked...I guess to fit it to the switch. In working on one to straighten it out..... I broke a leg off of the 37.600 MHz crystal.
I had a feeling that a tiny bit bigger hole (small bit in a pin vise) would have done the trick.... I had plenty of pad and it was only one sided. Oh well....
Anyway, I put it all back in the box for now. Got to hunt down a crystal. Never done it...but I hear it is harder than it used to be.
At the worst.... I buy another one of these.... decide which is in better shape... and go with it. It's always good to have a parts radio on hand!!!! (file this with "look on the bright side!")
Off to bed......

Two crystals are on the way. 37.600mhz (the one I broke) and a 37.650 mhz... The other one.... Just in case it is not in good health from shenanigans....
Back to waiting...
