I have mentioned in other places how my father in law got me interested in CB in the first place....back in around 1975. Well my wife, noting that I was infected.... got me a 23 channel JC Penny Pinto for Christmas for Christmas 1976. A few years later I replaced it with a Wards GEN-719 SSB radio. I sent the Pinto over to my dad who lived not far away.. to put in his 1974 Ford Pinto wagon. It seemed fitting. Well... he never really was much of a tech guy... didn't have much drive to get on the radio so we only talked a few times. One thing led to another, and his Pinto eventually broke down, was towed away and he got another car. This was in ...maybe.... 1980... 1981. We never spoke of the radio .... until about a year and a half ago. I asked about it while at his house...and he pointed to a set of brown cabinets in his garage and said that the best he could remember... he had put it in there. Dad left us Dec 28, '18 and my sister and I had to ultimately clean everything out of the house for an impending sale which just completed a few weeks ago. After cleaning the entire house down to the floor... the radio was nowhere to be found. The microphone...was indeed in the cabinet he had pointed to....but the radio was nowhere in the house. I am imagining that it may have been stuck under the seat when the Pinto wagon was hauled off. So why am I here?  YESTERDAY, on e-bay, I found one. Identical, the pics actually looked rather good.... not a lot of physical abuse/marring...... looked kind of decent. The seller said he hooked it to power... the light came on when he switched it on...but he had no antenna... so could not test further. SIX DOLLARS. It is on it's way to my house now! For that price, I'll just sit and look at it!!!!! With luck, I'll FIX IT ..... IF it is broke!!!!! I just do things like this for the memories.... I know it isn't the original one..... but it will be neat to see it to "remind me of a time". |

I really puts the whole idea of nostalgic radio collecting into it's proper perspective. It's not about finding the best, or the most radios, but the ones that held a special place and a memory or two along with it. Hopefully the radio will be in working condition when you get it. |

Just to add a point, back in March or so.... I bought a Royce 1-600B because THAT is the mobile radio that my father-in-law used the whole time that I remember him operating. I will always keep my eye open for a Turner JM+2/U as that was the MIC he had on it.
It just means something to me....

I received a new 23 ch pinto base in October 76 for my birthday. It was the first radio that I owned. I had been using a Webster Bandspaner 412 that was barrowed up to that point.

My vintage collection is mostly radios that were either owned by influential people in my local area, or radios that us kids stared at the catalogs and dreamed about, but didn't have a chance in hell of owning. I also have a Royce 1-600. One of my adult mentors loaned me one for about a month in 1974, when I was between radios. His had a Turner JM+3 on it. |

I have more fun playing with vintage CBs vs Ham radios myself. Same here. I've been a ham for 38 years, but that came after my teenage years and all of the fun we had in CB. So when I have a longing for the past, it's toward the CB portion, as it was just more fun. Ham radio has been useful and satisfied a lot of technical experimentation. But it doesn't match the raw fun I had on CB in the 1970's. |

You can find them online and yes the mic works very well, it's wired 4 pin cobra now.

I couldn't be happier! I happened to be working from home today (I'm a software puke. I can do that!!!!  ). The Pinto...was delivered ONE DAY EARLY!!!! TODAY!!!!! Appearance.....fantastic for it's age. A scuff here and there...but absolutely not abused. Came with the original mic. Put it on the bench. Receive... spot on frequency (now I only used CH13, right in the middle) and could receive down to -110 dBm and maybe a bit lower, that is great for a 43 year old radio!. With the squelch and ANL off... you could turn to 12 & 14 and not hear the RF generator signal at all. I consider it to be right on frequency. Transmit... well the transmit side of my gear is not set up yet, but I was able to pipe it through my PDC 700 into a dummy load. Transmits from 1 - 23. Varies between 3 1/2 - 4 watts. With my normal speaking voice it easily modulates to 70%-80% and if I speak a bit louder I can hit 100%. Absolutely pleased with this one.   |

I am currently just hooking it up to a Wilson 1000 mag mount sitting in the floor next to my desk so I won't transmit.....but.... I am hearing chatter from the area when it is going on. Have learned that the old gang from a few years back is STILL getting on 21 AM every night. It feels good!!!!!! |

It seems like there is more activity in a lot of areas than people think. CB is not dead, it just takes some people to start talking on a channel regularly and “they will come”.

Agreed, the first thing I would do is try a good alignment and see if you can drag it back. Perhaps time/tolerance changes have walked it away. An alignment should bring it back in.
Is your clarifier unlocked?

I had that exact CB at one point but can't place when I found it in the trash or garage sale, no offence, but I am a thrifty younger person who grew up in the 90s with CBs before the web and internet really took off for us in school. It was a nice little 23er as I recall. Oh yeah and that old Radio Shack power supply. It says 3 amps but can honestly push up to 4 before the regulator gets angry. I later parted out the power supply when converting a car stereo amplifier to house use in desperation as a kid before I got some decent stereo systems. The regulator in that thing is a tough cookie and was built with a good quality transformer.

And speaking of thrifty... you are talking to one who, in younger years, would find "Mr Coffee" coffee makers in the dumpsters in my apartment complex, find the little thermal fuses had blown, fix them and use them!!!!!!! Nothing wrong with that!!!! Thanks for the word on the power supply... I don't know a lot about it.... I haven't used it for a long time.... so it is good to hear some knowledge about it!!!!! I think I may throw this radio and my Wilson 1000 mag mount in the truck and start using it a bit. I have a little fear about doing that!!! The job that I have now (and have had since 2009!) requires me to use Metro Park & Ride here where I live. Back in around 2011, I came home from work one day...got to the park and ride and found the driver's door lock punched and my Grant LS GONE!!!!! Nothing new there, back in the 1970's it was quite common to mount your radio on a slide mount so you could take it out of the car and store it where it couldn't be stolen. Same for any stereo you may have had installed. Sad to see nothing has improved over the years... |

I didn't even have it in a mount... just laid it on the seat. Typically, I would unhook it and hide it under the back seat with the whip.
But this ONE DAY I was in a hurry and left the whip on the ball and the radio in the seat......
My fault..... but I did not think people were still interested in them.

This was an F150 double cab... no trunk.
But I still should have hidden it.
And it was a 1/4 wave whip...... on a quick disconnect....and I had left it on.
One could say "I asked for it".... I suppose.....
