Folks, what is the mod ( as specific as possible as I am still a n00b at working on these radios) to be able to use the manual tuner for transmit as well as receive??
Thanks

That is exactly why I have stayed here, not so much because I can add much...But because you guys are so awesome about helping and teaching us old radio lovers ( but not techie enough until now) what you know about this very cool hobby.
Like I always say and I certainly mean it,THANKS GUYS!

Ok, so I saw this guy who had at least 15 Tram's both 201 and 201A's. He started the auctions at 20 bucks...showed good pics..I know buyer beware, but I bought a 201A with the good ( gray) tuner for $60 bucks. Heck I also bid on another for $20 bucks. I figure at the least I can use them for parts..

One of my D201A's have that Cap mod done, seems to work ok. But I think the one in the pic is simply missing it's B/A brd. It ain't nothing a little money can't fix

exactly, just a very slight back ground, not heard in transmit, and it does tend to go away when you advanced the vol knob. FOlks just love they way this radio sounds on the air. There is nothing like a good running tube radio! Thanks to all of you for the help to make this thing run beautiful.

Ok, I got my D201A cleaned and running pretty dang good, but now I went to use the squelch and it doesn't seem to work..anyone have any ideas?? The knob turns, but nothing seems to happen when I turn it. Has all this work and new items caused a failure somewhere else??

When I bought a "almost mint" tram 201A about 10 yrs ago on Ebay, I honestly got a wonderful radio. It has started to show some age, but after that many years I expect it. But I think I paid $300 for it in the org. box w/manuals...not a bad deal if you ask me. But $700+ for the used, somewhat "gone through" used and very questionable item is alittle much...but I fear someone will pay that thinking they really got something. I have learned SO MUCH from all you guys, you have made me a much better Ebay shopper and taught me how to do minor work on my toys Bob

Yup! that's the guy....kinda sad whenever he sells a Tram, it's "is radio" and it's always "just gone through" again he refused to tell me what exactly that meant...

Ok, this guy on Ebay has another "MINT" Tram that he is selling. This one is also his personal radio ( kinda like the last one he sold) He claims it was just gone through and works like new, although he will not tell me what "gone through" really means or what if anything was done. He is willing to provide free shipping...his price is $750.00 .......I am simply at a loss for words. But is does come with the box!
BUYER BEWARE on this one...

Ok, I went through and replaced any resister that looked..well quite frankly old and or burnt. I went through about 7 tonight and I am getting another 6 tomorrow. But so far I have this old girl rockin! She sounds awesome and on-air reports were.. "wow..that thing sounds incredible" I figure I might as well replace a few more that look burnt or charred (hard to find a few of these suckers, but I get them from a surplus place in Omaha that has stock of the older bigger resistors so the look is the same) after I get them tomorrow. After I get this one done I will start on the other D201A that is way more of a project.

Ok, so I went through this thing tonight with a fine tooth comb! I found 11 resistors that need to be replaced( they are CHARRED) and I think I found the real issue..the big 3 way CAP ( 40x450) is leaking like a bad dog....ok, so now I have a question for the experienced guys.... Greg has replacement caps exactly like these..OR should I use cheaper newer caps? Money is not really the issue and I would LOVE to have this radio look stock...but if I get these silver caps from Barkett how long will they last???
thanks again guys
oh and to make it ever stranger, someone put a 47ufx450v cap on the bottom of the big three way...I wonder if there was an issue and someone jsut patched it to keep this radio running long enough for some sucker ( me) to buy it off Ebay??

The Tram D201A that I like to use ( the cleanest of the two) is very cold blooded. What I mean is it takes a bit to warm up to do a proper transmit. After a good warm up, say 20 minutes it sounds awesome and swings very nicely. But after a bit of use it kinda gets flaky. The transmit will not really work, when you key it the wattage will only do about 1-1 1/2 watts and just stay there, no movement for swing etc. I have to power it down then back up and it works again for a while then the same thing. Any ideas? ? thanks folks

Ok, so I have 2 D201A's one has the 6L6 tube and the other has the 6DG6 tube...which is better or does it really matter? Could I just pull one and replace it with the other?
thanks guys!

LOL...well it's like the old days, people only believed in a specific religion and everyone else's beliefs was wrong..the same with politics I guess.. Where as I love al the old radios, but I tend to play more with the Trams as I think maybe because they are much more high maintenance. Sound better ??

It's almost like a religion. I use both, but I seem to be drawn to the Trams first.

Being a long time Browning owner (since 1977) the only thing I have done inside my birds was add the cap to get the "ping" and maybe a tube or two. Anyone who has the slightest bit of electronic knowledge does undestand that lethal voltage lives inside the cases of the Browning, Tram, and many other tube radios and amps. These two radios (Browning & Tram) are so complex and different from anything else out there it takes nothing short of a good engineer to work on them. I have said it before and I will say it again. Despite the cost of shipping my radios the quality work and satisfaction I get using 'em is well worth it. We are lucky to have two of the four people who I consider to really know how to keep these radio's in top form here on this fourm. I have said many times (and my wife would love it) that I have spent my last dime keeping my Birds going but that ain't gonna happen! Darn shame that Nomad Radio only has the carry in business for repairs cause I can't walk that far. Just my two cents but I will leave these radios for the pro's. Husker, good luck and be carefull. Thank you sir! I am always careful as I want to enjoy the radios not be hurt from them. I also will be sending the better of my Trams to Greg to have him go through them as finances allow. But the two that I have as "donors" are the ones I am working on the see if I can learn some from them. again thank you for the kind words. Bob

It is a 201 and you are correct saying someone butchered it...it's a shame, but it is now a challenge to get it back to where it belongs

I am using an other D201 I have as a reference point....it doesn't have the traces cut...

Post by husker on Jul 19, 2008 12:54:04 GMT -5
Actually there is a jumper that was put in place after the trace was cut. So I intend to cut that jumper and redo the trace. What is the best way to fix that cut with a circuit brd that is this old. Should I just put a jumper in over the cut??
