Howdy ya'll, I have a couple sets of the Older 23s9's and 2700A's But I just got my dream set from an e-bay auction today. Had to go to the Post Office to pick them up(my mailman said it was to heavy) He's right, anyway to my surprise when I opened the box and the Mark III's looked and operate like new. I couldn't believe it-an honest true to the word e-bay deal from the original owner, and a great looking D-104 with it to boot. OK here is my question I also got a SCP Amp from the same source minus tubes. The Amp color scheme goes great with the Mark III's with SSB (it is the version with MAN,Xtls 1, Xtls 2). Anyway I can't find them anywhere. Any kind of help would sure be great. 73's RoadRunner A.K.A klk5762 back in 1964

Hello Old Classics lovers. I have two Tram D-201a's that I love and so do my contacts ;D They always comment on how good the audio is. I run my Tram's on a non-amplified D104, but is there a better mic for this radio? I think I already know the answer to that, but I like the Turner Super Sidekick mic on my President Washington. Wondering if the impedance match is an issue. Speaking of older radios, I have three TRC-455's that work very well too... too bad they don't have any tubes in them. I'm still on the lookout for Comstats and Stoners. Love to find an untouched Browning someday.
Cheers!

;DPING what a wonderful thing, I sure do like to make that Browning Eagle SCREAM!!! You got it Grumpy, "PING" That's why I just bought another Browning Mk III. I bought a new Gold Eagle Mk III in the early 70's. Kept it a few years and like a dummy, sold it. Bought another one a few years later. Still being a BIG dummy, sold it. Actually, my problem at the time was; I could only afford one or maybe two toys at a time. If I wanted a new toy, I had to sell one of the old toys. Today, I can afford a few more toys so, a few days ago I bought another Gold Eagle Mk III as a "Christmas" gift to myself. Now, I hear the beautiful "Ping" when I want to. Ah, life is grand. The Lord has blessed me more than I deserve but I'll keep taking the blessings and keep thanking him for them.

PING, ah yes one of my favorite sounds. Glad to sea all the interest in the Brownings and Trams. I have a beautiful Nichols built MarkIVA and a brand new in the box 40 channel Saber. I used to have a bunch of Brownings but my wife was getting a little upset about the $$$ I was spending on them to keep them running perfectly. I have never owned a D201 but would really like to add one to the radio room some day. I also have a nice 40 channel Model T that is completely restored and really barks. It works very well also in front of my Black Cat modulator ;D Can't tell I like the glow of tubes can ya??!!! 73's Barry

Why sure it counts
Some nice rigs you have there. I like the Colt and the Super Base radios, they were both good talkers.
Let us know how you like the Mark IV when you get it!

As a new guy here, I have to admit to an unhealthy fascination with tube radios going back to the mid 70's when I first got into CB (callsign KALJ8606). I currently own a non-VOX D201, a D201A, a yellow Robyn (T-240D), a Teaberry Model "T", a Regency Range Gain, a Knight KN-2565B, a Johnson Messenger Two, and a pair of RCA Mark VIII's. The Trams are my "everyday" radios. I love the Trams so much I even started a Yahoo group for them! I'm hoping to someday add a set of Brownings to the collection, Mark III or IV (gotta have SSB!), a Tram Titan, and a complete Demco Super Satellite station. Would like to own another "VOX" D201 again someday too. For "non-CB" stuff, I also have a Siltronix 1011D and a Yaesu FT101E, tho the Yaesu is actually a hybrid with tubes only in the final section. I also have an old Sonar 4-tube amp that i'm hoping to get going again someday, as well as an old 2-tube home-made "footwarmer". For antennas, I have an original Starduster up on the house, as well as a set of original Wilson Comets waiting to go on the tower next spring. At the shop I have a home-made Starduster-clone up, as well as a set of original Super Scanners I'm fixing up. Old school all the way! No "throwaway" fiberglass for me!

Hey everybody..This is my first post on here. Not much of a techie , but I got back into radio now that I have retired.I've got a GE superbase that doesn't work and a Tram diamond 60 that I picked up at a garage sale for 5 bucks.I don't think I qualify as a Tram enthusiast because I normally talk on a 142gtl at home. The GE got dropped down a flight of stairs around 1985 and I'd like to fix it. The tram has a nice RX but I was told that the tx sounds funny. Looks like somebody chopped it up but , being ignorant of electronics ,I can't be sure. Maybe if I can learn enough on here I can get them working again. ...73

Welcome to Michael
Did you try a different microphone on the radio?
|
|
|
Post by dogma142 on Mar 30, 2006 11:54:03 GMT -5
No , I haven't tried another mic. yet. Now that I have a power supply ,I will be able to more easily. I must have half a dozen hand mikes laying around to do it with. What I like about the tram is that it has sideband...even if it is a 23 channel. It's got crystals so I should be able to put some of the channels I normally use into it. Not many locals around , so I have a long wait for radio checks. The GE superbase only makes a hissing noise on all channels and it does not transmit. It doesn't seem to tune but if I put a walkie talkie next to it you can hear it faintly. The PA works , so the audio section is ok. I've checked it for cracked boards or loose components. After all it was dropped down a flight of stairs.!!

A Demco Satelite sounds tempting and they look pretty and talk hard but as I remember them they were constantly breaking down and I have enough junk. A Demco modulator would come in handy for future use though.

Good Evening, Folks....
I've got too much gear and not enough time to list it. Along with the equipment came "domestic noise" if you catch my drift. Well, week before last the wife met the UPS dude at the door and said, "What....another d**mned radio?" I responded, "It's the last one, my love." (snicker!) My dream had arrived.
Back in the day, "The High Sheriff" was running his Golden Eagle, "Okie Dokie" had his Demco Satelite, and "Red Rover" was bucketmouthing on his D201....they commanded the airwaves when they keyed the mic. My Johnson Messenger 223 and Cake Pan 100 pushed decent audio through the Mighty Mag IV I had peeking out the top of a 100' oak tree, but how I envied the big rigs. I said, "Someday......"
Thanks to info/parts/advice kindly provided by "2600," "Fixr," Greg Barkett and others on the forums; and, confirmed between 1415 and 1435 EDT today on 26.915 by #885 in Central NJ and #417 mobile in PA, my barefoot 2nd generation D201 is exactly where and what I want it to be. It gots uppers, it gots lowers, it gots hi/low power, and a partridge inna peartree. It's nailed down at 4-1/2W deadkey and swingin' 17, running through a Pride TF-1000 counter and Dosy PM-2001-TS meter to an Antron99 atop my 60' free-standing tower. All reports say it emits nothing but loud, clean audio.
I couldn't afford the D201 way back when, but I did purchase the pristine Diamond 60 I'm still running in one of my pickups. It immediately went to "The High Sheriff" for expanded frequencies; and, my buddy "Woodworker" at Exit 41 CB Shop in Cloverdale, IN updated the driver and final in 2004. Not because it had to be done, but because Doug said it should. How many people have been running the same mobile for 30 years? It needs a channel selector but a little tap with a finger helps it make contact.
I've got a tweaked and tuned President AR-144 in my other pickup....meter conked out long ago but it's mounted where I can't see it while I'm mobile anyhow. Nice little barefoot skipshooter. I have a 5W German export Albrecht AE5280 800 channel AM/FM mobile in my crapbox Ford Festiva work car and for backup should something break.
I like having pairs of the things that I like and depend on. I'm waiting on word from a seller in a failed D201HW auction whether he's going to take my offer or not. I'd sure like to pick up one of those for my garage and backup.
Thanks, folks....especially Grumpy for taking the time in his rough situation to help me get signed up here.....get 100% well quick, compadre. Wonderful place with wonderful people. Y'all got it goin' on and I'm proud you'll let me be here.

Well, here it is....two months down the road and thought I would have made more progress by now. Picking up where I left off in March.... After some fun with my D201, I decided to put together two retro-70s stations. I dug through my mental archives for candidates for a companion station for the Tram, and selected the Johnson Messenger 223 for the second. With all the great radios of that period to select from that might seem strange to some. Cost was one factor. What really made me decide on the 223 was how an old buddy of mine's 223 put out audio and a signal that held right up there with the big guns. Of course, he had some help....a D&A Maverick. So, I decided I was going to have to have a couple of boxes with the rigs. Current status.... Contacted Lou Marvin, WA6CAW, who is a bigtime collector/restorer of EF Johnson equipment, and told him I wanted a 223. We hashed out exactly what I wanted and how much I'd pay....he's building me a late model 223 in his spare time and I have a delivery date a couple of weeks off. Picked up Wawasee JB12 and JB76 Jewel Boxes locally; and, an Elkin Super Six 6-tuber off of eBay. Fixr has the JB12 and Elkin; I'm having some big fun occasionally running the JB12 60w modulator. Saw an obscure listing on a HAM site for a Browning-Drake M-523 mobile with matching power supply and speaker....couldn't resist it. Purchased it and a manual....also at Fixr's. As I could find no detailed Johnson Messenger 223 modification info, I watched eBay for modified 223s and scored one that was heavily modified for expanded channels. I gutted it for parts and the carcass is in my junkpile. I found an early model 223 on eBay that looked and turned out to be a fairly clean little rig. Has a couple of minor problems I'm capable of taking care of myself. Shack has been scoured clean of HF equipment and the D201 and early model 223 are up and running. I haven't been able to complete the station move to my blacksmith shop. I only have a 20A AC sub-box there and my deep freezer uses nearly all the available power. Waiting on my brother to return from CA to install a 50A box....I'm a scaredy-cat. Otherwise, all the small parts necessary for the move are on hand, and I'm still cleaning out the smithy and remodeling it. On a humorous note, back in early 2001, I suffered a "catastrophic failure" (third occurrence) of my heavily modified RCI-2990. I purchased the nearly $200 worth of required parts directly from Ranger, and the rig has been sitting ever since at my buddy Doug's (KB9JLR) house. He's the best radio technician I've ever met and I nearly drove him to insanity dumping rigs on him to repair....I drove him completely out of hollow state work. I talked to him last week and again inquired about progress on the 2990. I got the same stock response...."One day you'll ask and I'll tell you the rig's ready and come pick it up." This isn't a black mark against Doug....if I really needed that rig, he'd have it repaired and on my doorstep this weekend. It's just to demonstrate how much I really care about it. It's become a standing joke between CBer's who've become fast friends over a great number of years. So....here's where I'm at for the present.... 73,

Hey guys i'm new here from Alabama and I really appreciate this site. I just wanted to say that I "Stole" a Browning Lancer 40 Channel Mobile for less than 2 dollars lately and it works like new! so anyone think I got ripped off?. According to the Browning Labs Site this radio wa a prototype model that was discontinued just before browning shut down and never shipped to dealers. Is this true?. Could I possibly have a rare radio?. It has 40 channels, is yellow in color and has a gold trimmed face and knobs and on back has 2-A. Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated and thanks Grumpy for the nice site...Carl aka Meatwagon

Hello, I just stumbled onto this forum and found many people with a similar interest in classic radios. I just completed a restoration of the Tram D201, with a second one on the way. There's nothing that beats the sound of the old Trams and Brownings. I'd like to pick up a Eagle MK III someday, but they're still outrageously overpriced for their age. Maybe I'll find one squirelled away in someone's basement and I'll be able to wrestle it away from them. My current stable of "Classic" radios, includes the aforementioned Tram, a Hy-Gain 623 (Utopia), a Lafayette Comstat 25, a Cobra 135, Royce 640, Midland 13-885, SBE Trinidad and Cobra 139XLR. Anyway, it's good to run into some other classic radio enthusiests. I have a website dedicated to the glory days of CB radio home.ptd.net/~n3cvjLots of stories, a few recordings, and some nostalgic memories.

You have a nice collection of old radios there! I think Paul and I have rubbed elbows before. I know many of "the gang" on 37 lower, although I don't frequent there often. Many have been around for a long time. I'm usually on 21 AM, as it appears to be the only channel with any real local activity. I don't think I can reach Lancaster with any sort of workable signal, since my antenna is a homemade "Gutterbeam" home.ptd.net/~n3cvj/gutterbeam.htm , which is pointed east away from you, plus there are a range of hills near French Creek Park, which blocks my signal in the direction. I can do well to Reading, and points a little north, like Allentown, and east. But Southwest is my weak spot. I do enjoy my classic radios. It helps bring back the feelings I had in those days long past.
