Hi all,
I just started my new job as a truck driver and I grabbed a few year old Midland I used to use in my car. Well, it combinded with the fiberglass antenna on the truck only let me talk about 1/4 mile. I can only talk to trucks going the other direction long enough to get a radio check, but I can hear them for like a mile.
Needless to say I need some suggestions on a new setup, keeping in mind I have only been back to work for 3 weeks and dont have a lot of cash yet.
Here is all the info that might help. Its in a 99 Freightliner, my company has put +/- and an antenna lead on the dash allong with a mounting plate. However, the antenna cable is branched off to another cable on the top console where there POS CB is suppose to be (to me this drops the integrity of the signal but they insist it is ok and wunt put a new cable in). Anyway, the antennas are mounted on top of the mirrors (on fiberglass). I can add a bracket to the mirror arm which is metal and cut the cables down to about 4-6" and screw it back onto the top of the mirror.
I'm looking for a new radio, 2 antenna's, and a mic. I have a friend that has a Cobra 25+ that I can get cheap if it will work better for me, I had to talk to his wife he is out on the road and she doesn't have the actual model number. I also cannot use an amp, if anyone at the company see's it they will have it removed from the truck and confiscated, but I'm not looking to talk to the whole world but a couple mile range would be nice.
Then I just have to find someone with a meter to tweak and fine tune it for me
So basically I"m looking for the biggest bang for the buck, at least until I get a little money saved up.
Thanks in advance all.
