Messenger Blackface.. with a tweak...

Hey all, I haven't been here in a while, but I thought you might dig what I have been up too...

I have a Blackface that I have restored/modified and I though you guys might like the results....

I performed some basic cap swapping mods in the audio chain.

C24, C31, C35
Stock Value: .005 uF
Modification Value: 0.22 uF

Jumper R48 to increase power output to 8-10 watts carrier

The on-air audio was recorded with a RF Sampler attached to the antenna output and then it was run to a dummy load. The Audio chain is a MXL V57 Condenser Mic, Behringer VX-2000 Mic Preamp, PEQ-2200 Parametric EQ, EX-3200 Ultraflex Pro, Alesis Nanocompressor, MX-602 Mixer, then into the Blackface.

I want to keep the Blackface on 11 meters, but I also picked up a Whiteface that may get put up on the 10 meter AM band, if the propagation picks up.

Man, these old tube rigs sound great.. I wish there were mods to open up the audio in the newer rigs...

Oh man, the difference is phenominal! If I only had the money to set up some EQ and asymmetrical audio processing and compression. The best I can do is to kludge up a car audio EQ, but the thing gets riddled with RF feedback.

But that's sure a nice sounding tube rig. We need some of those on the roundup.

I'd love to jump in the Roundup.. but the only Xtal's I have are 10, 14, 17, 19, and 20...

Nice on the black face. I have a white face here, don't remember what freqs are in it. Someone had cut the cable to the "Ice Cream Cone " mic so I had to mount a four pin mic connector in the front middle of the bottom of the radio. I replaced a couple of caps and the final RF output tube and the thing blares. Johnson On!

Hell yeah, they sound great. I need to get my whiteface some crystals too... I modded the audio chain on that one as well.

i have a couple of white & black face johnsons i want to get crystals for, where are you guys shopping from for parts ? 2TX240 that is total studio sound quality that sum commercial stations don't even have good job !!!!!!!!
