Ideas?
Sure.
So long as they can still hear the roger beep, this means that the audio is getting lost UPSTREAM from where the RB audio feeds into the transmitter.
It's time to set up a second radio to use as a monitor. A five-dollar yard-sale 23-channel mobile on a power pack will do fine, or a CB walkie-talkie.
To find out if it's the mike jack, a wire leading from it, or the mike gain control, or the wires to it, key the radio and modulate it while worrying those parts of the radio. You'll know you're close when you can make the audio cut out and back in by wiggling the right piece inside the radio.
You should be able to find a weak link that cuts out when you pull or push on it.
Odds are this is a mechanical problem, either a bum control or a bad solder connection. The quickest way to narrow down where it's located is to mechanically 'worry' each piece between the mike socket and that spot where the RB audio feeds in.
And if it turns the only thing that makes it cut out is to lean on the mike plug, have a look at the split pins inside the mike socket.
If they have gotten 'squeezed' and lost spring tension, the tip of a box-knife blade can be used to spread open the gap inside each split pin.
And if the pins in your mike socket are solid metal, this trick won't help.
