So, how many of you have heard of, what several fellow hams on QRZ have called, "A declaration of war by Palmdale on the 2-Way Radio Community". Due to some talk that large antennas "may cause radio interference" the ... I guess it's a town ... of Palmdale, California has outlawed any antenna taller than 1" installed "aftermarket" on cars (as in the non-XM Sat. or AM/FM antennas) or installed on any house or property within city limits.
If they catch you, they WILL take your radio equipment, in direct violation of FCC rules (maybe I'm out of the loop a little, but doesn't Federal law supercede Local/community law).
I'd understand if someone had a "leaning tower of Piza" antenna tower that had people afraid of it's falling, but in my opinion, so long as the structure passes code (as in it is safe) then whatever you want to do on your property, who gives?
Just my .02
- JR / KC2UFP
I'll try and locate some links from ARRL and QRZ regarding the latest in this. The law will not only effect the Amateur Radio community, but also CB'ers.

I really can't comment in detail until I read the whole story. But PRB-1 specifically exempts Ham radio operators fom "unreasonable" antenna restrictions imposed by state or local municipalities. I don't know how a local municipality could enforce any type of antenna restrictions on cars, especially when cars are regulated by the state. CB'ers though, are a different story. There is no organization or law which exempts a CB'er from radio nazi towns and their draconian restrictions. This story should be watches as it could set the stage for other communities.....

www.arrl.org/news/stories/2008/12/19/10512/?nc=1There's the official story on the ARRL Website. There's alot of speculation in QRZ Forums, which I have, myself, thrown in my two-cents worth. Alot of people did mention how the township can't win with PRB-1 but they seem to think they can, as they are currently fighting the ARRL and local amateurs on that topic. There was also a video on YouTube regarding this. Alabama Tick - where in Southern Jersey are you? I need to update my location, as I have moved back to central Jersey (just outside of Trenton) from Michigan a few months ago. I've tried joining in on Channel 13, but sadly I get too much QRN and QRM on that frequency to make contact it seems like. What time is it ... I have the Pepper Net to take care of from 10PM to 11PM (that's in Trenton, the repeater is located at the airport).

Dave,
Looks like the car antenna ordinance is a lot of hot air, as it appears that the rumor mongering might have created something. I can't see them enforcing it as car that simply pass thru would fall victim. Plus how you you confiscate a legal product? Where would truckers fall into?
What is going to happen is that they are going to lose in court like everyone else. The precedent cases are all over the place, and ARRL has a website dedicated to it. The township is pretty arrogant and stupid.

I think the township was hoping nobody would notice the law, or that nobody would care. btw - I wasn't talking about 2-meter, but on 11-meter the Channel 13 chat I've been hearing about that's on Wednesday Nights - what time (Sandbagger). Or does that not happen any more?
Alabama Tick - why not just go on Echolink ... most of 2-meter activity is repeater-based (only reason I have a mobile is for chatting during long hauls) and Echolink activity is free. Also, you can chat across continents rather than just townships.

Classic Radio Roundup occurs every Wednesday (except on holidays like Christmas and New Years) night starting at 8:00 PM EST on Channel 13. We've had varying conditions and have been known to hear checkings as far away as 70 miles direct, and when the skip rolls, who knows? Several forum members have checked in from DX land back in the summer, but it's hit or miss. If you can't hear us directly, you can always access the streaming audio server and listen through the internet......

Penn Township, Pa recently tried to revoke a permit previously issued to a local ham. The neighbors (primarily ONE) made big stink about his tower, but once threatened with a lawsuit, they blinked. Palmdale is IGNORANT and stupid! They will get their azzzzzzzzzz handed to them on a platter. About the time they used their anal "ordinance" 'to seize equipment, particularly that of federally licenses stations, it will get them hauled into Federal court where they will pay BIG TIME! ;D I'd be tempted to drive thru there just so I could stir up.....er,uh (well, I can't say that on here! ) I could use the money! LMAO!! Rover

I am not sure about them seizing equipment. That might be rumor. I don't see where they would have that right.
