Most better designed solid-state CBs outperform my tube CBs on transmit modulation, but many SS do not have as good & quiet receive audio clarity as a tube radio. However, most higher quality SS radios have more sensitive receivers.
I like the tube Courier Royale as it has selectivity about as good as any SS radio. It has a dual conversion receiver with low noise front-end and a Collins IF mechanical filter.
Next, Cobra Cam 88 is good too. Both the Courier & Cobra Cam 88 has modulation mods to give 100% loud modulation. However, worthy is a solid-state Teaberry Big T with a dual conversion receiver with ceramic IF filter that does not have any adjacent channel bleed-over and has very clear audio. Outperforms most tube radios sensitivity, but more noisy receive vs tube type.
My favorite was a Royce 1-641 on AM until I tried a RCA CO-PILOT 14T303. The RCA has much quieter receive, has clearer receive audio vs the Royce. However, the Royce performs SSB unlike the RCA. Adjusting RCA pot V2 changed from 10 watts to 22 watts peak. The Royce did 16 watts with modulation opened up. For SSB/AM radios, the Cobra 2000, Cobra 139XLR, Cobra 142GTL, Uniden or President Washington and President Madison CB vintage radios are among the best. The Cobra 139XLR is usually the lowest price of the lot. All are close in performance.
However, I now use a President McKinley that outperforms all CB radios I owned for best receive. SSB power a little light at 12 watts, but turned up AM to produce 16 watts peak or 100% modulation with 4 watt carrier.

Should I try a Browning? My MK3, FS2340 , Utica town and country 3 and Tram TR27E will absolutely smoke ANY ss modulation. Citifone SS is also a blaster!

Well I'm new here, hello everyone, but, my Galaxy DX-94HP, after having it aligned and the low dead key set at 2 wats and high dead key set at 10 watts, is my favorite radio that I've ever owned or used. It modulates to nearly 110 watts, has a great forward swing and people I talk with tells me it sounds great. Of course as you all know, can be used as a base or mobile. Seems to be a great radio. Been using it over a yr now with no problems. Using a ranger noise reduction mic with it, fyi.

Update: For AM I like the 40 channel tube Gemtronics GTX-5000 that has ultra clear tube audio. Teaberry Model T and Robyn T-240 are same radio. SSB I like the Cobra 2000. Also Cobra 135 XLR is very good.
