Did Browning ever make a gold faced 40 channel ssb mobile. I know that I had a real nice gold 40 channel many moons ago, but I can not remember what it was. I know it had upper and lower channels and worked real good. I would like to find another one.

Browning Baron. I have 2 in my, neither are mine. One is scrap, the other seems to work.
Neither is worth the money commanded back in those days. It must have been the Browning name that gave it such a high markup. But his is not the mobile version of their classic radios. It looks like any other mobile, except it has Browning lables on it.

I just looked up a picture of the Baron, and it sure doesnt look much like I remember the one I had. Either it is not what I am thinking of or my memory slipped some more.

Thanks, I looked at a picture of the LTD, and that is not either. My radio was a larger radio, and much prettier.

I can't put my finger on the Browning mobile that you describe but I think that the LTD's were 23 channel. I could be wrong. I was working on an LTD and a Tram mobile, I think D-60 or diamond 60 and both radios seemed to be identical inside. Panasonic?

The Browning LTD and Tram Diamond 60 were both made by Toshiba. Basically the same radio. They made the LTD more narrow and longer than the Diamond 60. They just moved the parts around on the board to fit the chassis.

RL Drake had a hand in the design of most of the Browning bases, I'm not sure about the later ones though. Seems to me that years ago, I think before the S9, that there was a one piece unit marked "Browning Drake Amateur Tranceiver. This woud be before there was a Citizen's Band and 11 meters was part of the ham bands. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I checked my Drake operating book and it has a model M-506 and a M-523 listed as a 23 channel cb radio. It ran on 12 volt dc or you could get the matching power supply which I have. The the ID for the radio states : "The Browning "Drake" mobile has been designed to put famous Browning base station performance into a mobile unit. By utilizing the Browning separate component approach, greater versatility in mounting and operation is obtained. The features of the Browning R-2700A Receiver and the 23/S-9 transmitter are combined to give you the smallest, high - performance mobile available today. All - tube circuity provides greater reliability and easy maintenance." There's what they have to say about the Drake.
