I have one (2 actually, but one is a little "rough"). It's a really nice AM/SSB base radio. I like the aesthetics of the radio, and it has a really nice receiver sensitivity, although mine seems to be a little "noisy". Because it's only 23 channels, you will probably have to add a crystal to get to the common SSB channels if you really want to use it on sideband. But as a classic 70's era radio, it works great.

First off I think you have a very nice friend ;D
These are good talking radios, and should work well with the Turner +2. A friend of mine had one of these back in the 70's, he had one of the best sounding stations in town in my opinion!

Any color flat top LED is a superior replacement. You have to put a 330 ohm resistor on one of the legs, as a drop resistor. Flat tops are best because they evenly disperse the light. You don't get a beam effect from rounded top LED.

the radio seems to be working and putting out great. can i modify this to do the 34-38 usb channels? that seems to be where all the action is. id prefer to modify it where it is undoable or maybe add a switch to change crystals. I know you could change crystals on regular am 23 channel sets, wasnt sure it was possible on ssb. would the set have to be retuned. i really like this radio, just no one talks on the low ssb channels. any thoughts or help would be great. also if someone has a schematic of this set they could email me would even better. thanks to all.

The Royce is a nice base radio. I have 2 of them and I enjoy the performance, although IMHO the receiver seems to have a higher noise floor than some other radios. But to answer your specific question yes, the Royce (like most other 23 channel crystal rigs) can be expanded to cover the upper channels. The most common method to do this is to pull one of the lower 23 channel crystals that you use the least, and replace it with a crystal which gives you the selected 4 upper channels. Usually SSB'ers do this so they can use their vintage rigs on SSB. The usual SSB channels 36-40, can be had with one crystal, although there will be a "skip" channel (channel 39) unless you either expand the clarifier to drop down 10 Khz (which will also give you channel 35) or add an additional "gap fill" crystal (which will also give you all the "RC" channels on the lower 23). The crystal frequency you need is 23.735 Mhz, which is a 3rd overtone cut crystal. The rig information lists the fundamental frequencies, which would make this crystal a 7.91250 Mhz.
