What are your thoughts on the 223 was it any good in its day?

i had a 223 for a while a few years ago. as i remember it had some of the best ears of any tube radio i have owned. transmit side wasnt to bad either. just my two cents lucky strike ot740 k0twp

The one major problem most people will have with the Johnson 223 radios is the frequency synthesizer board. The PC board itself is made from cheap phenolic material, and that type of early board had problems where the traces and pads would actually fall off if you held down the soldering iron a second too long. Also the heat from the tubes would degrade the boards over time.

I got one about 15-years ago from the original owner and it was in great shape with no add-ons just stock. With the matching desk mic it has crisp clear audio and hasn't gave me any problems yet.

I got my first 223 in about 1983 . Since then, Ive had about a dozen of them.And Im never without one.In my opinion, one of the very best bases ever made.I have 3 of them
