i got a very nice working Comstat 23 off of ebay last week.
It is bone stock expect that i added a new cap to replace one that popped. I noticed that it has one extra channel in between 22 and 23. Was this common in the old 23 channel tube bases?

Was this common in the old 23 channel tube bases? The channel you have found was referred to back in the day as "Channel 22A", now it's known as channel 24. Because of the way most crystal synthesizers work (A bank of 6 crystals mixing with another bank of 4) the combinations equal 24 channels (6 X 4). In the beginning, the spot on the dial was left blank with instructions "not to use it". Later, the FCC mandated that the channel be electrically defeated so that the blank spot was dead and couldn't be used. Usually you could restore the channel to the spot by cutting a wire or filling in gaps in the selector switch. Some radios used the blank spot for another function like PA, most just left it blank. Some Lafayette Comstats actually removed the detent for the blank spot position, and you had to grind your own, if you want the switch to stay in place. |

YUP! Ch 24! I talked to someone last night on 24 and they asked what i was talking on. I told them an old lafayette comstat 23. They about flipped!
