Have fun! I just got a comstat 23, and it works GREAT! I have a D 104 Silver Eagle hooked to it and it screams! Im now looking to get a Browning MK III with a Mod 90 VFO. Then i can be settled, for now, (i say FOR NOW! lol) with my vintage CB collection.

I think I have a spare Siltronix Model 90 that's been upgraded for the Browning Mark III lower input level. I was going to use it until I scored the digital VFO from Nomad. I'll see if I can find it. I have a few Model 90's that haven't been upgraded for the Mark III. I think I have a PAL VFO lying around too.

Hey woody. You might check to see if the relays are dirty. I got a Comstat 25A today off of Ebay and the receiver was DEAD. I gave the radio a good cleaning and i cleaned the relays and it came to life!! When i first hooked it up today, i keyed the mic and blew a 0.1 600WV cap in the bottom of the rig (it seems it is always that same cap that blows in every lafayette or Robyn 23 ch tube rig i get!) which i replaced. Also a crystal was bad but i replaced that as well. Now the old girl is working decent. I love these old tubie rigs!

My advice to anyone who picks up one of the 60's vintage Panasonic-made tube rigs (Laff, Robyn, RCA, Cardin, Gemtronics, Teaberry etc.), is to replace that cap before you even power it up. It WILL blow at some point, and it can be disconcerting when it does, especially if you have the bottom cover off and you're poking around in the rig when it happens. There are plenty of 600 WV mylar or dipped caps which work just fine as a replacement. And while you're at it, there are 3 other similar caps that need to be replaced along with it.

That's why I always use a variac to bring the power up slowly on an old tube set. First time one of the caps popped it scared the crap out of me.

LOL!!! it sounds like a 22 going off! why is it that particular cap seems to be the first to go? I'm not sure why. It might be just due to age and when it starts to get leaky, it just goes "poof". I got lucky with my Comstat, the cap chose to fail open instead of leaky. But when I replaced it, I also replaced all of the other .1 and .05 can caps in the -82V supply. If you have a squelch that doesn't work, or you have to advance the control nearly all the way to quiet the reciever, the -82V supply is low or missing, and chances are one of those caps is at fault.
