For the last few Sunday nights starting at 8:00 PM EDT, Pete and I and a couple of other local CB'ers who also have ham licenses have been dialing up to 10 meters on 28.412 USB and having a little roundtable. Since the E-Skip has been making the local CB scene a little rough, escaping to 10 meters offers similar band conditions without all the noise, heterodyne and overpowered stations climbing all over each other.
Like on the original CRR, we're trying to operate older vintage ham rigs. Pete has a Kenwood TS-700 2 meter all-mode that he runs through a transverter. I was running a Kenwood TS-830SP. So if anyone out there has their ticket and wants to try hooking up on 10 meters, give us a shout.

I like the idea of running old rigs on the HAM bands. Everyone is hung up on having the newest bigest radio. Gives me an excuse to find out my low power problem on the Swan 260. I think I'll look into fixing the Kenwood 520 for 10 meters if this takes off. I think the best part will be "skip" Grumpys stations, like minded people, checking in and having a chat.

That's great, Sandbagger. The more radio activity the better! I don't have a ticket but I have radios that will tune and transmit on 10 meters. That's the same day and time as our Western Pa. Whiskey Sideband Net on 36LSB but I can tune on your frequency and find out if I can copy you guys. Probably going to be the same as 11 meters, to close for skip and too far for ground wave but I shouldn't have the noise to contend with. we'll see. I'll make a note to myself in case I forget.

This Sunday's Classic Ham Radio Roundup (10 meters) went off well. We had Pete (AA3RE), Jim (N3UGY) and myself (N3CVJ) running the local EPA area. Coming in on the back end of field day, and with the DX conditions fading somewhat, we didn't hear much out there except a couple of Florida stations, who could only be worked by Jim with his 7 element horizontal beam. Pete was running his classic "Rube Goldberg" Kenwood TS-700a 2 meter all mode into a HF transverter. I was running a Kenwood TS-530SP (Someday I'll give it back to Pete).
73, until next week......

Every sunday 8-10 PM Es(d)T on 28.412 USB. Also at that time the streaming audio server set to that frequency.

Good to hear you in there! And with a signal like you were throwing, you can probably become a regular.....

Sunday's are in-laws nights. I can now use an excuse to get out of it for at least once per month. Surprised about the signal. Standard 100W with an Imax.

We had a blast having you. Its nice to get somthing going regular that we can get people from the forum to talk on radio. With a signal like you had up here you most certanly can be regular. If you can get that once a month pass.

All you need is a technician class ham ticket to talk on the portion of 10 meters we're on. We use SSB (USB), and some of the "export"-type CB rigs can tune up there. The thing is that 10 meters propagates pretty much the same as 11 meters, so there is no real distance advantage. So if the "skip" isn't in on 11 meters, it won't be on 10 meters either. The big advantage to 10 meters though is that you're not fighting hundreds of stations climbing all over top of each other and generating "S9 heterodyne", so you can hear the weak ones better.

Back in 1977, I used to talk to some guys around Chelfont, & Boyer Town, PA on my bare-foot FT 101-B, & a PDL II. I lived in Mays Landing NJ. I was EC 3071.

Well, we were able to talk to you during the CRR last year on AM. So I would think SSB on 10 meters would be even easier. You've got your ticket, you should try getting in there some Sunday night. I'd be great to hear you......

QRZ.com and other places have on-line practice tests you can take. Once you think you can pass the test, you'll have to find a local ham Volunteer Examiner group that gives tests. Usually they will charge a small fee, but it's not much.

Here. These are free. When you pass them with regularity, then you are ready. When I took these for practice, I waited to take the real tests until I was passing these for a week. www.eham.net/exams/

My only rig for 10 meters, is an AR 3500. It's in the shop right now (lost TX). When I get it back, I'll try to check in to the net. I may buy a nice HF radio this Summer, when I have a little more cash flow. Bob.

Dave and Spitfire,
I tried this past Sunday (Feb 20), and could hear you guys, but the QRN was way too high.

I was wondering if you were in there. I did give a shout out for you. I have zero QRN here, a bonus of living in the woods with the nearest nieghbor or power lines over 300 yards from my antenna.

Dave and Pete (It's Pete, right?),
Sunday nights are dinner at inlaw nights. I can occasionally get out of them and spend the 2 hours on the roundup. On nights that I cannot get out of, I usually get home around 9-9:30pm, so I can catch the tail end.
Remember, if I am hear, I will attend!
Regarding the QRN, I have been having it on alot of bands. Just since this solar flare erupted. I am also out in the farms near nothing. But with the SFI over 100, I expected better.

I normally have a fairly low noise floor, living in a new neighborhood with underground wiring. But every now and then someone runs a really dirty appliance or there's a loose electrical fitting somewhere and I get loud buzzing for short bursts. It can really make receiving a tough deal, especially when you're trying to pull someone out who's not all that readable in the first place. Sunday night was fairly quiet up our way, solar flares notwithstanding, so I'm sure we would have heard you. Shame your ears were plugged with all that noise. But Pete and I (and any number of other semi-regulars) are usually in there every Sunday night, so anytime you get a break, give us a holler........
