And the winner is: The Sonar FS-23. It had better audio (more punch) & clearer receive. The ANL on both radios sounded bad. Both radios were in similar condition using D-104 mic's.

There were not many tube radios that sounded as good as the "FS" series.
Put a Demco modulator on the D104 and it will realy scream !!!

The sonar was made in brooklyn New York well I have both radios and I say radio for radio the browning mark 3 is the better radio now put a demco modulator inline with the sonar watch out. I think for the next match up put the sonar fs-23 up against a utica T&C 3.

I had a 2-piece Buddy, but I sold it around 10 years ago. .. I have an old Demco Modulator laying around. ..Right now I use a Black Cat JB-12. ..I adjusted the modge on the Browning, & now it sounds as good as the Sonar. I use a beat up Golden Eagle mic. on it.

Oh Yea.....
The (2) 6BQ5 modulator tubes in that FS-23 do the job !!!
THE EXACT setup you have now was THE KILLER AUDIO SETUP back in the day !!!
You can't get much better than you are now !!!!

Lets get real here. First you have to start with fresh tubes and stock mics no external audio or rf boosters. Then you are comparing radios. Put a demco on a radio and you are comparing external mic amps or in this instance with and without and that demco will take out your internal modulator and rf output tubes in short order. the local TV repair shop used to keep them in stock for my Yaesu 101 for me.

But the 12BH7 is a dual triode tube, so it's still a push-pull audio output. This delivered a greater punch than the usual single 6BQ5 or 6AQ5 modulator tube that the typical Panasonic chassis radios used.
