Unit 106 in England was kind enough to record a video of me using my home made Lazy H wire antenna coming in skip to the United Kingdom on channel 39 LSB. I was running about 1 KW. : ) "116 Mr. Michael. S. Carolina, USA" www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEvzEQsRdkoI reciprocated and recorded him coming in to South Carolina. This is my recording of the same conversation. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQHWMra7oJ8Night Ranger I listened to both "gates" and it sounded like you were doing far better in signal readability to him, than he was to you. But it also seemed that his noise level was much lower than yours, and that may have made the difference...... On another somewhat related note, I heard someone (sounded like a local down in your neck of the woods) calling for "nightranger" on channel 21 yesterday.

On another somewhat related note, I heard someone (sounded like a local down in your neck of the woods) calling for "nightranger" on channel 21 yesterday. Hey Sandbagger! As far as his readability verses mine, I was putting out four times the wattage he was, the Lazy H has 6db more gain than the Antron 99, the Lazy H is higher up in the air, and the Lazy H may have a lower take off angle than an Antron 99 at the same height. I thought he was coming in very well for only having his A99 at 25 feet up. As far as his receive verses mine, I was probably catching alot more of Mexico, South America, the Caribbean, and the Unites States than he was. I was using the same Lazy H I use to talk to Pennsylvania. Apparently the lobe is wide enough to catch the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. With the added incentive of using that Lazy H for F layer skip in to western Europe I may have to get my butt off the couch and put up that screen reflector I keep talking about. That should help get rid of the southern Hispanic skip on that antenna not to mention the additional 3 or 4db of forward gain. I don't know who would be calling me on channel 21. The only time I went there was last summer when I was listening to your locals. The only non-F Layer skip I was hearing today was Minnesota. They were having a snow storm and apparently that was stirring up the E layer. Oddly enough I did not hear any of their neighboring states. The rest of the skip today was the usual F layer skip from western North America and Hawaii. I did hear Texas, but that seems to get here via F layer on a regular basis. On another note I keep eyeballing the Alpha 8410 amplifier with two 4cx1000a tubes. I keep telling myself it is easier and cheaper to get another 6db gain via the antenna. We will see if I talk myself out of it. Night Ranger

He sounded like a southern boy, based on accent, and a more Carolinian/Georgian style than a Kentucky or Texas drawl. I thought it might have been one of your locals, but as I think about it, I don't think we had conditions down to your neck of the woods. But since it was during the waning hours of the F-layer, it could have been a quick shot of E. That lazy H antenna of your continues to be impressive. Even if you were running a kilowatt (which is only 10db more than 100 watts), you were pushing his meter into the red pretty consistently. I think you need to get working on that reflector........ ;D

I have too much CB / ham equipment, so I what I may do is Ebay some of it and use the funds for future purposes. How much I recoup off Ebay sales may determine whether I fork out the money for the Alpha. I'd have to re-do my Lazy H antennas for a larger gauge of ladder line to handle that thing, plus I'd probably need a 3 kw antenna tuner to boot. Oh yea, and I'd need a bigger dummy load. My current one is a 1.5 kw oil filled dummy load. Still, two 4cx1000a tubes! There is a video on Ebay that shows an Alpha 8410 kicking out over 2 kw. It should also run at the full legal limit with 100% duty cycle all day long. Of course Gene would find a way to kill it......

QSO # 2 with 106 Lee on the East Coast of England on 39 LSB. This conversation took place one week later on Thanksgiving Day. Lee gives some interesting information on CB frequencies in the United Kingdom. I have videos for both sides fo the QSO as well. I made a 150 mile ground wave contact with my west facing Lazy H this weekend. When I lived in Rock Hill, South Carolina I use to talk to a guy named "Chuck" on 38 LSB. He lives in Greenwood, S.C. in the western part of the state. Now I live near Moncks Corner, S.C. which is the southeastern part of South Carolina. Last Sunday I heard Chuck talking on 38 LSB. He runs horizontal all the time. I easily broke him. Not a a bad contact for a wire antenna 50 feet off the ground. It was about 6:30 a.m. and the skip was not running yet, so I don't think it was back scatter. I have also heard one guy in Rock Hill, S.C. a few weeks back, but I did not try to break him as it was on channel 6.

Nice contact made to World Radio 541 "Syd" in New South Wales, Australia on channel 37 LSB. I was using my Realistic TRC-451 and my D&A Raider with 22jg6a tubes putting out 200 watts in to my west facing Lazy H antenna. I received a 10db over S9 signal report from a station in Stuttgart, Germany on my homemade Lazy H antenna with 200 watts output. I caught the conversation with my HD camera. ;D AK3100 in Stuttgart, Germany on 27.385 and 27.400 MHz - 11/17/2012 www.youtube.com/watch?v=537lgLO64yMNight Ranger

Send him the link to the YouTube video. He would probably like to see his signal from the United States perspective. I talked to someone else in Stuttgart, Germany about a year ago on 27.380 MHz LSB, but I don't remember who it was. I was in my car in North Charleston when I did it! That was a first. Night Ranger

I'll stay in for the next hour or so untill about 11am local. I'm stuck at work, but maybe I'll listen in on the live feed. I did hear some Sporadic E skip from the Great Lakes area last week. It came in about the time the F layer skip to the west coast faded out in the evening. The East Coast must be pretty hot in to California in the evenings on 38 LSB. I can get some contacts in with 200 watts on 38 LSB with the six element curtain array, but if I want to bust the 6:00 pm to 9:00 p.m. EST pileup consistently I have to hook up one of my dual 3-500zg amplifiers.
