Night Ranger checks in to the Classic Radio Roundup in Pennsylvania, USA from Charleston, South Carolina. I was using a home made extended double zepp wire antenna on horizontal at 50 feet for this recording. You can also hear Fixr coming in via skip on this recording. Video and sound recording of the live feed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHR9q0lPK2c: )

What good old Classic Radio Round-up. Skip coming from everywhere. Nice to have Nightranger and Fixr and Sixpack all checking in to CRR during a major "E" skip event. I also heard Fixr and Nightranger working each other. I was running the Tram Titan and Regency Imperial last night. Both radios put out the same power however it would seem that the Imperial does a better job under crowded conditions.

I should have another 3 db gain in your direction now. That makes three Lazy H antennas total. It is working, but I have a faulty commercial 1:1 external balun that is heating up. When I put a 50 ohm resistor across it I get a 1.7:1 SWR instead of a 1:1. I'm going to hand wind one to replace it. I tried a 4:1 balun, but the tuner likes the 1:1 better at least for this antenna. The length of the ladder line seems to determine whether a 4:1 balun of a 1:1 balun works better. If the skip is rolling from PA this evening I will give you a call on 21. Maybe I'll record you on this end with my HD camera. : ) Night Ranger

Too much hate and discontent, but it's still entertaining to listen.

The skip was not as strong tonight as it was last night, but I still consistently hung around the s7 and S8 on your Royce 640. What antenna do you have hooked up to that Royce and how high is it? Night Ranger The Royce is hooked to my 3 element beam, which is mounted on about 40' of mast from a ground level elevation of close to 400'. Because of local hash and trash, and my usual desire to minimize skip noise, it's usually pointed east or east-southeast. When we made contact Wednesday night, I threw the beam south to make better contact. So last night, that S7 you were seeing was coming in off of the side of the beam so, in all likelihood you were doing just as well as Wednesday night. Although skip conditions from day to day are rarely identical, making accurate A/B signal comparisons hard to quantify.

Once I get the problem of my 4:1 balun heating up fixed I'm going to throw some big glass in there just to see if I can step on your local trouble maker/jammer. Actually he usually puts in an S8 on your Royce 640 and I had an S8+ last night, so I may have already squeaked by him on your end for a few seconds with only a 100 watts. On the balun, it looks like I have the wrong core type for the ferrite torrid core at high power. I found a 4:1 kit on the net for continues legal limit, so I may order a few of those. I'm going to try building a 4:1 air core balun first though. If that does not work then I'll have to fork out the money for the kit. Below is the recording of the live feed last night while I was talking skip on the Lazy H that points towards PA. I hit the highest signal around 5:00 minutes in to the recording. YouTube rejected the video because it was too long; www.shadowstorm.com/mp3s/live-feed-june-30-2011.aviNight Ranger

If the conditions are good enough, you won't have any trouble taking out those guys. Wednesday night there were times when you hit S9, all it would take is for conditions to be as good or a little bettter. Having 6 db more power wouldn't hurt either. I took my big amp out of storage and lightly fired it up. One of the tubes is gassy from sitting, so I need to let it bake on low voltage to hopefully restore the vacuum. I did slowly bring it up to 200 watts dead key this evening, before I started to see purple gas in the tube. I also I tweaked the Lazy H's today for a better match. Below was the skip test in to Spew Radio with 100 watts on the TRC-451 setup. The video freezes for a few seconds when my computer lost the Internet feed, but it comes back. Let the getter heat up and run for a few hours and you may cure the gassy tube.
