Without seeing the wiring I'm making a guess, but the knob on top of the microphone base is probably either an echo effect (since it has a variable knob) or some sort of noise toy.

REGENCY is the way to go also is my opinion but another great old tuber is a SONAR FS-23 OR 3023. Still have one of those, the audio is great. Have to move the Mark 3 aside & plug it in every now & then. i have an old blackface courior that i use a unampified mike on

There are a lot of responses in this thread saying the Regency imperials have great audio. Is this on side band or AM? The reason I ask is because I have a regency imperial and so does a friend of mine and And on AM everyone says they sound kind of funny. And I have to agree with them.

None of the ones I've heard sound "funny" (a rather vague definition). Most sound punchy and loud. You don't need a lot of mic gain to make them talk well. A unamplified D104 works best, but an amplified D104 works well too as long as you keep the mic adjustment conservative. Of course any old radio could sound "funny" if parts are out of tolerance or the radio is out of alignment.
