Interesting. I wonder why they started selling radios.

I don't know the answer to that question, but I do know that Home Depot has been selling the small GMRS radios for years so this is merely a growth to that product line.
I do know that THD is sensitive to the online business boom that is ongoing right now, and is the fastest growing online business on the www. To drive this growth THD has been advancing their online product line by quantity and types.
Our in store SKU counts run into the thousands, our online counts to the ten thousands. Also, many of the items online can be shipped free freight, as has been pointed out, but also our policy of buying online, and if not satisfied, return at the local store makes online purchasing much less troublesome and much more attractive to the online buyer.
The option to buy things that are in the stores online in the comfort of your home and pick them up later in the store, called BOPIS, is very popular, too. The Home Depot has added the Pay Pal option to purchases in the store for those who dislike using their credit cards to process purchases, and this feature is growing in popularity, too.
When you stop to consider how businesses like Amazon, who once sold only books, are now extending their product lines, you will see the trend that is causing growth by others in the online business.
Likely the in store product options at The Home Depot will have to remain geared to the Home Improvement and construction industry due to limitations in physical space, but with the growing product lines on the www our customers will continue to see e-options improve. I hope the CB hobbyists will purchase these radios in sufficient numbers to keep them as an available option. I hope to see the electronics options grow online.
Some have pointed out that the radios online are $10 - $20 higher than other radio shops sell them, but with free shipping, and the option to return it to the store instead of repacking it and sending it back to a faceless online shop wondering whether you will be satisfied by a return of your purchase price to you bank account this radio becomes a real bargain.

Plenty of screwdrivers and hacksaws at the local store. All you need is a hacker to screw up the radios.

I was just kidding, Homer. It would be nice to see radio communications make a bit of a comeback. Even the amateur bands have been a lot quieter than they were back in the late 1970's.

That's because everyone is sending text messages wih their smart phones. Everyone has the capability to engage in wireless communications. Being a radio ham (or CBer) no longer gives us exclusive access to the airwaves.

It would be nice to see a resurgence of interest. On the other hand, when the radio gets busy it seems to get crowded around a few frequencies so that it becomes difficult to actually communicate effectively.

Here's a novel idea, maybe RADIO SHACK can start selling serious CB radios again........ Oh please. The people working there know nothing about anything but asking you if you want to switch mobile phone plans or if you want an extended warranty on whatever you buy. Try finding any parts in a Radio Shack. If I need pasts nowadays I just order from Mouser or someone like that.

Our local Harleysviile RS stills sells two CB's: The venerable Cobra 29 NW and some uber cheap compact Midland I believe. Saw that the Cobra 29 NW was not on the shelf last visit and asked the clerk if they sold it and he said yes and that they were only of about (6) RS's in the Philly area that still stocked the CB's and will continue to since they sell a few a year. I usually walk out of RS with a few 12V "grain of wheat" bulbs, split ferrites for my mics and some replacement knobs. You can never have enough knobs to turn

Home Depot would do a better job of selling CB's then RS any day. Plus many of the associates are CBers and Hams.

They are still a good source for 102" steel whips, if you can get them to look in the back of the store.
