It was fun to hear CRR go side band on 13 the other night at the request of none-other than 770!?? I see we're keepin' it all inclusive and it lets operators with 23 channel SSB rigs clear the cobwebs out their sideband sections.
I try not to overlook the 23 CH Sideband rigs when adding to the collection 'cause it's easy to say all the SSB action is on CH's 36-40...

If my memory serves me right, I think back in the days when there was only 23 channels, 16 was the 'official' sideband channel...help me out you guys that were operating back then...so I don't feel so old!

You are absolutely correct, channel 16 was "the" SSB channel back in the mid 70's. Sometimes channel 17 was used, and those who had opened clarifiers or VFO's used to drop down to 15a when there was a need for a little more room. Back then two groups could operate on USB and LSB on the same channel, and unless you were close to each other, there'd be no interference. Yea, I'm getting old too....... ;D

I can remember when you could only use channels 9-15 & 23 for contacting other licensed stations, with channels 1 through 8 and 16 through 22 reserved for stations with the same license. You can still find old 23 channel radios with dials marked that way.

Yesterday I tried one of my Mark III's with a Siltronix slider on 38 lower side band.
I was somewhat surprised to not hear the normal "ping" upon key up. It let out a horrible "car crash" with "fingernails on black board" combo sound on key up. I checked with another radio and found the sound so muted that I couldn't really hear it in the SSB transmission though. It sure does play out on the receiver's speaker...That is one nasty sound.

You can still find old 23 channel radios with dials marked that way. Then when they made channel 9 the emergency channel, there was one less interstation channel to use. JC Penney radios were one brand that commonly colored the selector dial to match the proper channels.

The Robyn T-123B channel selector was that way as well.
