Whatever the output actually is it is pretty impressive. I could hear him coming in via skip when he was out in Phoenix, Arizona, and he was as strong as the bases out there. About a month later his alternator went poof and he had to buy another one. Night Ranger

About a month later his alternator went poof and he had to buy another one. Night Ranger Back in the 90's, I was friends with a guy who went by unit 1490. He had a '73 Chevy truck that he ran a Cobra 29 into a Dave Made "4 Pill", driving a custom made Dave Made tube amp that he had installed in a bed mounted tool box. That setup would put the needle on a 10,000 watt Bird slug to around 8000 watts (which he showed me right in front of my house Luckily none of my radio stuff was damaged). Now I have no idea whether or not this power reading was full of spurious or whether that was his true on-channel power output. But it was impressive in any case. In the right humidity conditions, he could make a blue corona light up around his antenna, and it would leap at anyone who walked too close while he was keyed up. One of our friends took a video of this while it was happening from a fair distance, yet the RF was interfering with the video to the point where it took all the color out of the recording. You could actually hear his modulation vibrating the air coil in his antenna. Wild!

I wish the FCC would crack down on the power guys on CH 6.

I wish the FCC would crack down on the power guys on CH 6. I think it's a lost cause. Sort of like abandoning a sinking ship.
