Hi too all.. I used to be very active in the cb hobby in the 70's spent many wee hours after getting home at 12;30 in the morning. As i think about this it still brings back fond memories oh well time marches on. I just bought a new 29 to put in my Motorhome I have an older class c (van nose) with mirrors with arms but they are too close to the body. I bought the "best" tunable magnetic mount I could find. My question is if I glue a 12"x12" steel plate to the roof which is aluminum will the roof still operate as a ground plane thanks any advice to this old fart is appreciated. thanks Joe

I wouldn't recommend it, you'll get galvanic corrosion from where the aluminum meets the steel. I'd just drill the hole on the roof.
Or you can get a universal hood mount for the van front and mount it there, but it won't be as good as being on the roof.

Some motorhomes have a ladder to get on top. That can be a mounting point for an antenna. I have used them in the past with good results.

My old motorhome had a luggage railing on the roof that was bolted onto the frame. I used a mirror mount on that and put a 3' fiberglass whip on a spring. Used to hit damn near everything, but it worked pretty well.
I'd be a little hesitant on using the rear ladder unless the siding on the motorhome was aluminum. If it's fiberglass, there's a good chance that the ladder is isolated from the bulk of the metal, and would not make an ideal ground plane.
