Just finished up playing late night radio on a 75 buck Craigs List radio. It's a Texas Ranger Elite TRE-936FFC. I think they meant to label it TRE-936FCC because it's a type class approved 4 watt AM CB radio. This radio is a great AM modulator with a 3-4 watt DK swinging 15-18 watts PEP clean.... easy.
Only downsides are the variable talkback can't be disabled (yet) for use with a desk mic and forget about seeing the blue silk screen text on the mirror chrome faceplate, I'll just memorize the easy AM controls.
The frequency counter looks cool ( not sure why? ) in an all blue LED scheme. The 100% chrome Stealth-like exterior also looks sweet sitting on the bench reflecting all the other equipment.
No echo. No channels. No FM. No clarifier. Just a good sounding AM radio.

I've always wondered about the need for a frequency counter on a limited capacity PLL channelized radio with only the AM mode so no clarifier......

Got it from a retired truck driver. Need I say more I can... it came with a Dosy Dough PM 2000-TS 2000 watt power meter and a Uniden external speaker. "How 'bout a South-bounder, how we looking over your shoulder? Kick it on back driver"

But on the whole, the receivers are way noisier, and the cheap Chinese construction leaves a lot to be desired. I'll stick to my vintage stuff. These new radios just can't compare to the richness of the receive out of an old Tram, Browning or Sonar.

Doc Hammer, good to hear from you. Do you happen to remember where you got the directions on how to disable the talkback or did just cutting the wires off the talkback potentiometer disable the talkback altogether? Since I run the radio as a base, I definitely don't need the talk back at all. Alas, you know me, just having a wee bit of fun with those cheap RCI Craig's List radios. It's like an adventure

Follow the 2 wires off the talkback potentiometer to the board and clip them 1 inch from the board (in case you wish to hook it back up). That disables the talkback. I then ran those wires to J-17, if I remember right, which should be vacant in that chassis...in order to hook up the variable power...you can then adjust the main VR and set your dead key for your lower and upper limits.I had mine set to 2 on the bottom and about 5 on the top...that radio is a great AM rig.....Easy mod that works good.
