CRR for 2015 kicks off for the first time tonight. Since it is supposed to be bitterly cold tonight (single digits), I'll need a nice warm tube rig to ward off the drafts in the shack. So that means Tram D201. Hopefully it'll be a great night of classic banter.

Well thank god for the Spew network so I can get my first CRR for 2015. And now I can get it on my Nexus tablet makes it even better! But I will fire up the Browning Golden Eagle series 1 just to watch it glow in the dark.

Great 2015 Gate, thank you County Wide. Everyone sounded loud and clear on my minty '78 Royce 642 AM/SSB 40 Channel CB base station. Last night we were having especially good local conditions with the snow covering the ground. Always with an ear for HiFi, at first I thought I heard local operator Chuck chime in there around 1:40, but was pleasantly surprised to hear Side Winder from South Jersey come booming in with some bodacious wide band AM HiFi audio. I was trying to remain calm, but was really jumping up and down in the shack ... A real highlight for me being in the hobby. It's a DM World for sure. Sparky 775 out.

Yea, and I'm interested in what he meant when he said that I had "some IMD" on my signal. I missed him saying that to me at the time, but heard it on the gate. It's possible that there are some distortions in there, but I have to wonder if that's the result of my compressed audio out of the MC-85 mic, or some other part of the chain. They're certainly not audible, and don't show on the scope, or the RF analyzer. On the other hand, soft clipping of the audio can result in distortions which emulate what tubes do, and result in a warmer sound, so that may be a good thing....

Hopefully the skip will die out, but I have a feeling that this snow system will keep it in there a bit longer than normal. But we'll see......

Well my plan was to drive up far enough to join in the CRR tonight. But with my son getting sick and the snow that's not going to happen. Maybe next time!

Always wanted one of the Motorola System 500 base rigs or even one the 500 mobile units of which I believe there were two flavors. One was a scanning radio that I read that the PSP (Pennsylvania State Police) used to run them in their squad cars. They go for big bucks on the bay.
The other was more of a consumer model without the scanning feature I think Anyway I read they have great receivers in them but I'm not sure how well that proprietary Motorola stock power mic worked modulation-wise. I don't think you could use any other mic with those?

I don't think you could use any other mic with those? I think the stock mic on those rigs was a simple electret condenser type. Power was sent up the audio lead and went from there. I knew someone who had one of those rigs years back, and the audio quality was definitely not full bodied "HiFi". It was a lot like Tickle sounded with the paper cup element, only not quite that bad. It was true "communications quality" audio.... It got the job done, but wasn't room filling. You could put a different mic on it, so all was not lost.

Well the Motorola system 500 is AM model and doesn't scan. The scanning model from what I was told if you don't have the factory mic that comes with it the radio is worthless.

Warning beware of running Russian transmitters they give you brain cancer. And occasional headache per usage. And above average room temperature. That had me cracking up!

Ah, you overheard us digging through the "ol' zero-five" catbox. Gene was an entertaining guy when he was around, and he was never short of material to chuckle at.

Well Hygain 623 would be a good choice to start off with on roundup.

Do you have a matching Hygain microphone to that unit?

Well Hygain 623 would be a good choice to start off with on roundup. I almost ran that at one point last night, but once my repairs were done to my Heathkit amp, I chose the Cobra 139 and then the Midland 13-898B

Do you have a matching Hygain microphone to that unit? No. I forget though, did Hy-Gain offer something other than your basic hand-held stock mic with the 623? In the foggy recesses of my mind I seem to remember an unamp'ed D104. But I don't know if that was a factory issue or a dealer option.

Well not sure about the D104, but I did see a preamplifier mic for Hygain with a 5 pin end. It kinda looked like a banana microphone in a sorta way. Now I know that has a phono plug, but I thought they mite have a optional power microphone.

But I don't know if that was a factory issue or a dealer option. My 623 came with the black hand microphone, and the dealer did offer either a Turner 254 or a Astatic G stand as an option (you could pick the head).

Classic Radio Roundup tonight are you ready! Yep! And I think I'm going to blow the dust off of my Lafayette HA-410, at least until the drifting drives me nuts and I switch to something else.

When it was working the audio sounded good. I did hear you trying to zero it in quite a few times and then after about 20 minutes it started to sound like it was arcing out somewhere. Don't forget to put a post-it-note on it, haha

Well when you have arcing inside a radio that's never good, or like lightning bolts in your radio. Now that's POWER! Nothing but plain old HIGH VOLTAGE ⚡️
