When it was working the audio sounded good. I did hear you trying to zero it in quite a few times and then after about 20 minutes it started to sound like it was arcing out somewhere. Don't forget to put a post-it-note on it, haha Yea, I didn't notice any visual signs of arcing (Unlike what I saw with the SB-200 last week). I'm thinking there is a cap (or 2) breaking down inside. But whoever the yo-yo was who did the original 11 meter mod, they really did a crappy job of it. No wonder the transmit VFO was so unstable. If I ever get some time to work on it, it's going to need a lot of cleanup in wiring and parts. It would also be helpful if I could find the correct schematic for the revision that I have, which includes the proper tube compliment. This radio would make a great candidate for Hi-Fi mods.

That's okay, there's always next week, but you would have heard the big audio from my Sparky-O-Matic CB 5100 base. It's got excellent receive with variable fine tune and tone control plus two noise blankers and RX attenuator . The squelch is a thumper though.

Classic Radio Roundup tonight!! Now that the clocks have been set ahead an hour, we may have lingering F layer interference for a bit, but the last couple of nights have also brought in some E layer skip. So any of you guys in the "E-Zone" might be able to check in tonight. We'll be sure to keep an ear out. Tonight's 1st hour radio choice will be:

Another great turn out last night. Plenty of classic radios on the air. I ran a Midland 13-898B 23 Ch AM/SSB base station that had some decent audio but the carrier wouldn't stabilize. I'm thinking a failing voltage regulator as I was using a known stable auxiliary power supply, not the internal one. Dig the real wood corners on those '70's vintage base stations

Good to hear everybody in there last night with the classics on. You all sounded great on the Spew and the Gate. Spitfire Demco gate rolling just listened to that gate this morning. Heard myself on there in the distance on Cobra 148gtl with a Browning one pill mobile amp. Couldn't pull anyone out of the noise level. Flying J said he could hear you guys in there talking. Just to let you guys know Channel 15 is having there breakfast break at the Sungate dinner in Marcus Hook this Saturday at 7:30am. Just if you were interested.

News flash, Side Band Engineers take over CRR...
Had some fun on the radio as usual last night. I pulled down a SBE Console II of the shelf and low and behold Sandbagger had his SBE Trinidad going as well. Not to be outdone, Top Gun from Maple Grove brought out a couple of SBE radios settling in on the loudest of 'em all, a SBE Cortez mobile 3 knob radio. Who knew?

I ran both of mine. I think I finally got the receive audio on the Trinidad sounding clean again. Bad cap in the AGC line:

Hey just to let you guys know that last night's Classic Radio Roundup the ones you were hearing was myself (No Streak) and Flying J. I couldn't hear anybody, but heard myself on Spitfire's video gate. I was trying to log on SPEW network but kept getting bumped off. Till you heard us talking about it being down. And Sandbagger fixed it then it was all good. I was going though SPEW withdraw lol. I use Video Ultimate to listen to SPEW network it works well and it's free. Everybody sounded great last night good turnout as well, and thanks for keeping the classic radios alive.

You're probably talking about "No-Voice". Most of us can't hear him (it's surprising that you heard him on the gate) well enough to have a conversation. Between his low signal and matching low modulation, and his speech problems, it's really hard to converse with him.

And his signal kept on rising as the night went on. Which made me think that we were getting a local band enhancement. I thought it was strange that no one was checked in to the Spew Radio server on a CRR night. Turns out I was having an issue with my router. It acts up occasionally and refuses wireless connections or runs really slow. A quick power cycle and all is well again. I'm glad I heard you guys talking about it, or I might not have checked it out for a a couple of days....

Yeah Flying J was running a 6 pill box and was turning it on and off though out the night. Myself I was running a Cobra 148 gtl old version with a browning one pill amp. I was lucky I made it at all on 30watts. I'm glad you fixed the Spew because I couldn't hear any of you guys, have a high noise level. I tried like five devices and no prevail, was going though Spew withdrawal.

With all of the noise generating digital widgets and non-incandescent light bulbs etc. out there, the ambient noise level has gone way up from what it was like 30 or 40 years ago. In just the last 2 years, my noise level has increased nearly 2 "S" units. It's really frustrating, because I used to be able to hear most of the distant stations. Now I can't seem to anymore.

Sounds like No voice. Apparently he is in close proximity to Gene (ZIP) in Malvern and completely wipes out his receive on 11 meters AM. Too bad and that in itself wouldn't be an ongoing issue if he only said hello once and awhile then laid back so Gene could also participate in CRR. Since I can't hear No Voice I'm not exactly sure of the situation, but I'm told No Voice just keeps on trying to break over and over and gets irate if no one responds

Well I think No Voice tried his best to be apart of CRR. And there isn't anything wrong with that because I know that it's sure enjoyed by myself. That's not the first time I've heard him in Pete's video gate.

That's not the first time I've heard him in Pete's video gate. Yes it's fun to be a part of CRR and it's always been all inclusive, but IMO there are times when it is a common courtesy to step aside and let others step in when appropriate and not to cause interference with general communications, savvy?

No Voice needs louder audio and some more power if he wants to join the group. Heck I hear the guys down in Aston better than I hear him. Funny if he's close to Gene (but I guess on the other side of the hill), how I can hear Gene like gangbusters, but not No Voice. I remember Gene once saying that he usually ducks out of there because No Voice is constantly pestering him. Yike......

We have a guy down my way a little challenged. Starts off with breaker then give him the break and the comeback is how you doing. Sad to say not much of a conversationist, so I stoped answering that breaker and he is persistent till he gets one too.

The thing is, I always hear No Voice. I even give him breaks, but then he never has anything to say ( i think we gave him a wide open door last week and......nothing),which in of itself is hard to hear. So maybe I am rude, but I gave up on him because well, he has nothing to say. 441

That was fun. Especially communicating with other folks also running 500ma on the base antennas at one point. I got the memo and ran a Radio Shack 21-1679 40 Ch Walkie-Talkie (with weather alert & hi/lo power) using a Realistic external speaker mic for the first half. The radio is literally the size of a pack of cigarettes and resembled a medical science project with all the cables hooked up to it for use as a base. It has great receive claudio as I use this radio as my 11 meter station monitor with studio headphones. For the second half I que'd up a Robyn SX-102D 23 Ch crystal radio nestled in a matching Robyn SX-10 base unit with clock. Together they look like a full factory base station. It was a little off freq at 27.1146 but worked well otherwise. It's the unit on the top of the two pictured:
