Pretty good turnout last night, me and Buffalo Bob ran Royce I-640's. We have 14 checkin's so not to bad didn't break any records but still was a lot of fun. Can't wait to do it all again next week!

Well the ARF 2001 arrived yesterday in good shape. And well packed and worked well which is a BIG plus. A lot to understand about operation of the radio because it has been modded with extra channels and a expanded Clarifier control. I put a Silver Eagle microphone on it and that with the built in SAM enhance speech processor it seem to do well. Lucky for me I have got the paperwork to understand proper operation of the radio. I think there some bugs to work out on SSB mode but I think they are minimal. 73' I would just like to note that I would like to thank SpitFire for the return of the video gates! I myself total appreciate the gates and listen to the OH MAN's lol. Keep up the good work,us Delco Boys salute you!

One of these days on a CRR night, we'll do a "mobile theme" night and drive down that way and see what kind of "situations" we can create. We'll bring our walkie-talkies too, and maybe make it a dual theme night.... You never know....

Peakbagger? No relation I'm sure....... Also found it interesting that folks actually document their trip to the highest places on the site. My write-up could go like this: Drove 1.5 hours to site and arrived around 7:15 PM. Parked the diesel wagon a few hundred feet from the fire tower and erected the 20' mast with the MACO 103c beam antenna to the back of the truck's hitch adapter for stability. Hooked the 2/0 welding cables from the RF amplifier to the dual batteries. Connected the transceiver to the amp and aimed the beam. Promptly set the big diesel engine to high idle and DROPPED THE MAUL ALL NIGHT LONG

Not really I got the ARF 2001 for $589.00 which is fair for a working unit. And the CPI 2000 I got for $399.00. So really for what you get not bad, I would rather pay them prices before I paid $800.00 for something that hasn't been tested or sometimes works. Then I would be crying for sure. The ARF I have wanted for years and the CPI 2000 I had to get rid of for money reasons. And was never able to get another one because being married sucks all your money away! So I figure what the hell while I have the money why not get it now. They are both awesome radios for that time period. Do they compare to a worked up 2547 with modulation crazy output no. But still a amazing receiver that I would put right up there with the Tram D201's adjacent channel rejection at least compared to the CPI 2000 base. The ARF 2001 is a Single conversion receiver Adjacent channel rejection Is about the same as a galaxy.

The ARF 2001 is a Single conversion receiver Adjacent channel rejection Is about the same as a galaxy. The CPI-2000 is a very well designed radio which excels on SSB. On AM, because of the low level modulation scheme, and the careful balance you have to maintain between carrier level and modulation percentage, means that it may not sound all that good, until it's set up properly. But the receiver is darn good, and if you spend a lot of time on SSB, this is the radio to have (other than ham rigs). I've never seen or worked on an ARF, so I don't have any personal experience with them. But the one you were running during the roundup was good enough to be heard up our way. So something is working. As for the Galaxy 2547. While I love how easy mine was to make into a HiFi audio powerhouse, the receiver leaves a lot to be desired. It's a "noisy" receiver that is sensitive enough, but just sounds noisy even when no signals are present. It also seems to drift around a bit, which would suck for SSB use. Bottom line, the Galaxy, while a great looking and feature packed radio, wouldn't hold a candle to the CPI in terms of overall performance.

Now my ARF 2001 isn't stock, it has a channel mod done and the SAM works AM & SSB with any microphone I put on it. But a D104 sounded to bassy and wound up using a 1104C desk microphone with tone control to remove most of it. And then it sounded fine, it would have been nice to have a frequency counter Instead of a clock. But I'm just happy to have one at this point. And yes the am modulation on a CPI 2000 is much to be desired but I'm hopping with a linear that will change.

And yes the am modulation on a CPI 2000 is much to be desired but I'm hopping with a linear that will change. I've heard some CPI's that sounded mushy on AM right out of the box. The modulation is very touchy to set right. If you increase the carrier power, then you have to increase the modulation limiter adjustment to preserve 100%. Conversely,if the carrier power drops, you have to back off on the modulation or it will overmodulate and mush up. You absolutely must never defeat the modulation limiter or you'll never be able to keep it sounding clean. On the one I worked on, the carrier power would drift which would sometimes require adjustment to keep the carrier/modulation ratio in line. When it is set up correctly, the AM sounds pretty good. No, it won't satisfy the "all knobs to the right crowd" for sheer loudness. But it will sound clean and clear. The radio is also capable of over 30 watts out on SSB, but the power supply can't handle that much power, so I wouldn't exceed 20 watts.
