I did try to make CRR last Wednesday night (and actually did turn the radio on for a minute or two and heard Sandbagger and Ranger talking about chain saws) but alas, I had to be in Manhattan at 5am the next morning which translates into an obscene wake up time. I just couldn't hang or I would have

Like most older 23 channel radios, the Simba has a clarifier that moves both transmit and receive. The range of movement is not all that much, less than .7 Khz each way.

Yes, the Simba has punchy full audio, but like a lot of early Uniden chassis radios, the receiver was prone to intermod. Not much of a problem now, but back in the day when you had people within 1/2 mile on 5 different channels, it could be problematic. And yea, it was expensive. The only rigs more expensive were the Hy-Gain 623 and the Browning and Trams......

It was amazing what some of the high end radios sold for back in the day, but there was a lot of work put into those units, too.

Wow them radios were costly back in the day! That's what it cost to hand wire a premium tube rig in the USA back then. But when the average Japanese-made rig was only a couple hundred less, those with deep pockets and a craving for the absolute best performance could justify shelling out the extra money for a Browning or a Tram base radio. But then the bottom fell out. Prices of radios fell off as cost to manufacture dropped and cheaper locations to make them became available. American companies could not compete and that ultimately doomed both Browning and Tram (and many others before). Tram tried to become more cost competitive by using less labor-intensive PC boards in the later versions of the D201 and D201A, and moving production to Mexico. Finally they came out with the D300, which was simply another Uniden-based radio, which should be price competitive with President, Cobra and others. But by then, it was already too late for Tram...... I'm just glad today's CB radios don't cost what they did in the 70's. Especially when you factor in the cost of inflation.

Haha. SBE " Speech-Spander" AMC & " Taku-Twirler" channel knob. I'm really embarrassed at some of the lame marketing and silly names that some of the manufacturers use to push their rigs. I mean "Taku-Twirler"? Really? That's actually worse than "Slide-O-Tune", a staple from Pearce Simpson..........

SBE Sideband only mobile cb radio An interesting, although completely impractical radio. The Sidebander III was about the same size as the Cortez, so they made a great combo pair. But then again, if you wanted both AM and SSB, you could have opted for the Sidebander II instead, which would have been cheaper than the price of both the Sidebander II AND the Cortez combined. But suppose you were a die-hard SSB'er only, and the thought of AM just turns your stomach, would this radio have punched your ticket? It's hard to say.... For one thing, there were only one, maybe 2 channels normally used for SSB back then, so there were a whole bunch of unusable channels on that rig. You could probably zero beat and listen to channel 19, or another local AM channel if you wanted to, but listen would be all you'd do, as most channel 19'ers had AM-only rigs. Calling for a roadside emergency on channel 9 would have been an exercise in frustration as well. But it's good that they marked channel 9 in red so that you'd know I've seen these radios turn up on E-Bay every now and then, so I guess they sold a few of them back in the day. A SSB-only radio would have been nice if they had adopted one of the original channel expansion plans, where they were going to allocate a large chunk of spectrum for SSB-only use, and channel spacing would have been 5 Khz. But alas, that plan never saw the light of day.
