In need of a pll board for this radio. Hoping someone knows where i can find one. Would rather find an upgraded version like in the 4a or something similar to the nomad boards that use to be around years ago. Thanks

I saw Operator Ron's old Mark 4 (he got from Tim) for sale by #9 Excalibur on Craigs list this week Unfortunately I believe that unit has a hacked up PLL circuit. I offered him some bucks being it's basically a parts radio, but I understand he's trying to get more. philadelphia.craigslist.org/ele/4889552648.html

It had some sort of intermittent problem in the PLL. Pete had it working, and it didn't seem to screw up while he had it, except it was a little bit off frequency.

Thanks anyway guys but i believe its all set. Looks to be a couple of ic's that failed. I was missing certain channels and some of my research came back to being ic 401 ic 105 and 106. So far that seems to be the only problem for the time being. Got to wait on the parts from Barketts. Too bad nomad electronics no longer has the replacement pll boards. Would prevent many headaches in the future.

Life got busy. Back to running the shop solo again. Cuts into time for forums and such.
We produced the replacement Mark 4 synthesizer for 12 years. Every time I made another run of them, more of the important parts were discontinued. Got tired of redesigning it to use available parts again and again.
For the first ten years I would get a half-dozen inquiries a year. Once I quoted them the $160 price, I would hear back from about one in four. Made it hard to work up the enthusiasm to develop an updated design.
Murphy's Law rules, of course. Once the available stock fell to the last ten units I started getting four or five inquiries a month. Ran out of them faster than I expected.
Sure wish I had known how popular it would become once we stopped making them. If I had known it was that simple, I would have discontinued it years earlier.
The updated design is now a year or more behind schedule.
Oops.

Nomad would be the man to ask... I'm not sure IF he developed a Digital VFO Conversion for that Model Radio or not... Recently I saw he was selling Converted Siltronix or PAL VFO's for different Radios on EBay, but can't remember which VFO they were based on, or the Details... I guess I suffer from CRS; Can't Remember S__t... I own a MK IVA and did a little research online and discovered within a Vintage CB Radio Periodical called "Secret CB", Channel Expansion Mods for the MK IV / IVA... Look here and select at the Top, Index by Radio www.cbtricks.com/pub/secret_cb/index.htmI had skimmed the Instructions and saw the use of an additional Browning Crystal Circuit Board; Part # 14-0069... So, I suppose I would have to hope to locate the Board, or reproduce one, or get creative... Today, there are Circuit Board Manufacturers and Computer Software they prefer to work with available to the Consumer... The Mod also requires Crystals and New Crystals are available at www.icmfg.com/ Also required is a SPDT Switch... I have yet to have a closer look inside the Radio to better understand the Mod... Not sure if there are other ways to accomplish the Mod... Anything can be done with enough Time and Money and some Online Research... Someday, I may attempt to Expand the MK IVA...

Nothing but bad news on this front.
We still have not developed a replacement for the discontinued Mark 4 synthesizer that you can buy.
Bummer.
And International Crystal Manufacturing Corp is closing down.
No joke. They'll be gone in May 2017.
Not sure what orders they might accept between now and then.

I would be interested as an angel investor and tie it to my radio business. Joe

I would also like to see a run of these boards. I have a Mark IV that loses the channel display and the leds on the mode switch. If nomad needs some Solid buyers, let us know what you need money wise to get a run going. We can do a "go fund me" lol. I would like to get this one going as it was my dads radio. Thanks!

If the mode indicators on the receiver is going off also, then your problem is more then likely not the PLL synthesizer. I would guess that you have a problem in the 11 volt power supply section.

Thanks for the reply, I did follow the service manual and checked all voltages. The 11 volt circuit is good going in with a/c but dead coming out of the rectifier. I'm going to assemble a rectifier out of diodes and start there. Apparently someone replaced the transformer and did a horrible job. I will fix the circuit and if all checks out, I will disassemble the botch job and clean everything up.

Thanks to all who had replied, I went thru this radio and replaced the 11v rectifier and caps, and I also cleaned up some of the botched transformer job. The set now turns on with a working digital display. I started recapping the radio but the mode switch on the TX took a dump with the switched part of the wafers all cracking at the centers. If anyone has any parts for the mark 4, let me know. I'll even take parts rigs if anyone has one laying around. But at least I'm making headway here and thankfully Barketts does have a replacement for it.

Although I'm up PLL wise on my Mark IV, I would still like to see a run of Nomad boards for this radio. Also and as an aside to the nomad boards as there are a good chance they may not Come to fruition. So with that said, if anyone is interested in working on an arduino or raspberry pi design et al.. Maybe we can start a brainstorming session and get some minds going on it. We can start another topic on it here.
Regards and Happy Holidays to all!! Richy04

Go with a DDS based design. I spoke with Chris (Nomad) a short time ago. That's the new path he believes he will take. for the PLL. Saw a DDS unit ready to go without any mods. Only catch, LCD not LED display.
