Well, the final Classic Radio Roundup of 2016 went off on 12/28. It started off slowly, and I was afraid it would be a complete bust. Once again (2nd week in a row), Pete overslept or was otherwise not in attendance. Eventually people started coming out of the woodwork. Slammin' Sam was out there running a new Turner +2 mic, Sparky showed up but couldn't stay for the whole night. Others who showed up to say goodbye to 2016 included Skeeter, Night Train, Operator Ron, Rooster, Security, Chuck, Tickle, Ranger, Stray Cat, original Operator, and Gumby. The Delco crew was also heard, although my higher-than-usual noise level kept me from understanding much from our friends at the bottom of the state. There wasn't a theme for the night, so I grabbed my Hy-Gain 623 which I stayed with for the whole session. I'm still getting over a chest infection, so I wasn't in the mood to play musical radios.

Yes a very nice turn out. That Hy-gain always sounds good. I couldn't hang, but was able to sandbag for awhile while I packed my tools up for an early trip to NYC. Contraband:

Ran the Sears 23 PLL "mini-meter" rig for CRR. It's similar in size to it's predecessor, the Sears 23 without a meter. It got out pretty well and the little meter actually worked. (had to get out the magnifying glass to confirm) View AttachmentMy teenage CB friend "Red Horse" had the PLL version of that Sears mini-meter radio back in 1977. I could actually read the meter back then without glasses at age 13. Red Horse toasted his Sears radio after repeated peaking attempts crumbled the ferrite cores. He used a Realistic amplified desk mic with it. If you use an external speaker and flip the bottom desk mic switch from electronic keying to relay the radio will make a sort of warbling noise as the ALC tries to hold the modulation back. You have to get the distance between the microphone and speaker just right. Red Horse use to do that for his on the air noise maker. The only problem is it is very loud for the person sitting in front of the radio. Night Ranger

Of course if the limiter was clipped, you didn't get that neat warbling effect, and it was instead a very loud screeching noise. Not fun for the ears......
