Celebrating Pearce Simpson theme night, here's 3/23's CRR candidate: View Attachment Pearce Simpson had some nice looking bases in the mid 1970s. I always liked the looks of the Pearce Simpson Bearcat 23c and the Pearce Simpson Super Lynx. Unfortunately the Bearcat 23c was mostly a big pretty box of air. I've never looked inside the Super Lynx. Night Ranger My favorites are the Simba (same Uniden chassis as the Courier Centurion), the Bengal, and the Lynx. The Bearcat 23c is a cosmetically improved model over the 23a, which had 3 mobile sized meters instead of the 2 larger ones. Pete has a 23a version. I think what I like best about PS radios is the simulated woodgrain trimming on the front panel, which gives it that homey 70's appeal.

Saved me some download time I would have been in awe of that pretty radio if I had managed to get my hands on one back in 1975/1976. Night Ranger Ironically, while those PS radios sure were "pretty", some of the early Uniden chassis that they used were prone to intermod and receiver desense. The Lynx (and its cousin the Regency CR-142) was one of the worst "bleed boxes" around. To be fair, Cybernet based radios weren't much (if any) better. Some of the better performing mid 70's solid state radios, with respect to bleedover, were those made by Toshiba (Cobra 135/132, Browning LTD, Tram Diamond 60), and some of the better made Royce SSB chassis. To their credit, Uniden got better when the 40 channel radios hit the scene.

I think those P.S. radios (Lynx, Super Lynx, Bearcat 23c) used the 14 crystal scheme without a fixed first IF. I had the same selectivity issue with my Regency CR-230 mobile with the same crystal scheme. Night Ranger

The theme for 4/6/2016's CRR was "Cobra Night". So in keeping with the theme, here were my two candidates for the roundup: _ The roundup was very lively, although not with the full compliment of locals, but from several more distant check-ins. It was tough to get any sort of deeper conversations going, with so many breaks. I guess that's the price you pay for popularity. I do want to thank those who checked-in, even if I couldn't hear you. My ambient noise level pretty much limits what I can hear to those above S5, unless I point the beam north (few people are up that way though).

Wanted to see how well the 69ffc4 did compared to the Stonewall Jackson. I usually run low power on CRR anymore so I don't interfere with Chuck from West Chester. I know he likes to be in the group with you guys and we sometimes clog up his ears. Just thanks for the chance to get in their with guys, I also utilize the Spew network to make my communications. It's just nice to part of a group of people that shares the same passion for CB radios as I do.

Good to hear you in there as always No Streak! I had a good copy on you from Spring Mount Ski Area on my clean Cobra 2K base with a desk mic. I couldn't stay for the "after hours" show due to an early morning commitment. There were a few new check-ins up this way...Stray Cat, from Harleysville and Rat Man, from Doylestown. All in all 15+ folks over the course of two hours Sparky 775, out.

I Keep checking your page but no new videos, hopefully this summer! 73's I had conditions one or two nights back around early January, but I have not heard PA since. The sporadic E should start coming this month or next month. From a South Carolina perspective it usually starts in the more southern states first and then progresses North as the weather heats up. By June it is usually wide open to PA. I have heard Louisiana and Florida a few times in the past month. The "Lake Effect" appears to have some bearing on Sporadic E from Wisconsin, Minnesota and occasionally Southern Ontario as they weakly come in sometimes during the winter months. Night Ranger

Night Ranger Thanks night ranger, late skip has started to filter in here the past few evenings 8 till say midnight. Few channels were dead quiet and others channels had decent conversations going on, sounded like local talk till the one dude say he was in Florida, and the other end was a new jersey station which I couldnt hear. Its funny though because thats the only state that I can hear. Hopefully the sporadic E stays for a long time this summer, and we get to hear each other in the speaker of out cb's, When it does I will have my video rollin!

4/13/2016's CRR was another lively one with all sorts of distant breakers wanting to check in. The growing threat of interference from new train control systems which jam channel 13 (In violation of FCC part 95 IMHO), may force a channel change at some point in the future. It's doubtful that the FCC would intercede on behalf of CB ops. That would really be ironic. Anyway, the theme last night for the first hour was Radio's without meters. So my candidate for that was a TRC-11: Then for the second hour, I went a little more HiFi to make up for the anemic stock mic on the TRC-11:

For 4/20/2016's CRR, I think we'll just "run what we brung". I'm not sure what I'll throw up on the bench, I might not make my choice until 8:00..........

Could be a Jacque Ce' Penei night? And it was! Rockin' my JC Penney 6237 40 CH base station. It had a bit of 120Hz hum using the built in power supply so I fed it with an external 12VDC supply. Issued resolved for the show, but I'll open it up and replace the filter cap while it's on the bench.

Last night's CRR radio choice, Browning Golden Eagle MK III: The Roundup started off a bit lean, as I suspect the warmer weather, and longer days, is keeping people out and about for longer. But by the end of the night, things started hopping. Seemed like "local enhancement" conditions were at work, as some of the more distant stations were making a decent trip.

Update: I found the schematic on CBTricks, and surprise surprise, it's not a regenerative receiver. It's just a very broad superhet.

Well, here it is, another CRR is just a few hours ahead. My situation this week is nearly identical to last week, so I'll probably be late to the party yet again. Although if the afternoon's softball game gets rained out, I might not be as late this time. The's no formal theme this week, but Pete says he's running his SBE Trinidad, so I may do the same....

The roundup was busy, but was a bit frustrating for me as there seems to be a bunch of new people looking to check in, but who are running barefoot with less than optimal antenna systems, and I can't hear them. They always seem to be to the east of Pete, and I'm 10 miles to the west. But it's encouraging that so many people are looking to get back into CB radio, and hopefully vintage gear. We did miss Sparky, who had to make a run to Delaware and could not make the roundup. Good to hear Tickle back in there as well.

Well I was running the Hygain 8 late night and was able to almost hear Tickle and Spitfire so that was a good sign. Hopefully if I can get my beam back up I can talk live in person with you guys. Without relying on a 10-5 or Spew relay. Waiting for the gate to pop up on here or YouTube to check out the action. It was lite last night on Delaware Country Roundup last night 3 of us were in there. All Classic radios were run so that was a good thing. I know it sometimes can be overwhelming with the word getting out about you guys doing the Classic radio thing. Which is exciting for people like me that love old radio gear. And the channel gets taken over by new people check in's and at the same time your thinking what a Monster I have created. But in hindsight think what we all loved about CB radio in the first place your five minutes to shine in a crazy busy channel.

But in hindsight think what we all loved about CB radio in the first place your five minutes to shine in a crazy busy channel. Yea, I have mixed emotions about the whole thing. On one hand, I'm surprised that it's taken this long (We've been doing CRR since 2008) to catch on, but I'm also proud that I was a part of something that seems to have appeal beyond just the handful of locals we started out with. Looks like a good deal of people would like to turn the hands of time back about 40 years and return to how CB radio was back then. Yes, it's also frustrating for me when there are so many breakers in there. Since I only get one night a week to play CB radio, I have a week's worth of topics that I'd like to opine on, as well as offering up technical advice on the various projects that are usually in the works by someone in the group. It's tough to settle into deep discussion mode when there are so many interruptions. And when I can't hear most of them, it's even more frustrating. But on the bright side, when a whole bunch of people are in there that I can't hear, it gives me a chance to rip into a radio, or some other piece of equipment, and make an adjustment or two while I'm taking a standby.
