The SUPER lynx. My first classic base station to be aired on CRR way back when. I usually unplug the motorized analog clocks due to the racket they make. I've had some success reviving them with some new lube in the AC synchronous motor casings. Always dig those "On-Air" and "Modulation" lights

9/28's CRR was another (very) lightly attended affair with only 3 of us (Pete, Ranger Rick and myself) for most of the night. Skeeter made an appearance toward the latter half, as did Ramrod, and Stray Cat. Slammin' Sam checked in from a mobile install that he did in an RV, Grease Monkey checked in and then disappeared, and #7 waved a hand for a quick 3 minute shout out. The Delco guys were in there with their concurrent CRR (but also seemed lightly attended) and we spoke with Renegade and Buffalo Bob. There was the din of low level skip heterodyne in there as well, which did little other than raise the ambient noise level, but no significant signals rose up out of the noise that were able to be worked. Since the temperatures have dropped out of summer mode, I was able to run a tube rig and so I opted for the Browning MK III. I always love the receiver on this rig. It's one of my best, Shame there weren't more people in there.

Night shift in Manhattan kept me out of the area or I would have been in there. Did get to put up some cool neon. For some reason it made me thirsty Spoke to Stray Cat and Hawk Eye in the mobile on my way back though.

10/5's Roundup was another light turnout. Pete overslept and missed the party (no video gate). Sparky was MIA as well. We had check-in's from Skeeter, Ranger, and Slammin' Sam on a new (to him) Pace 76 base. Tickle, Ramrod, Stray cat, Top Gun, and Night Train round out the list of locals checking in. The skip had faded out and was not an issue, and the Delco crew was heard as well. I took the opportunity to run another tube rig, my Lafayette Comstat 25. The receive on that radio was really good compared to many of the solid state rigs. I usually have problems hearing weaker stations through the noise. But the Comstat seemed to have a lower noise floor, and those weaker stations just seemed to pop out of the grass, similar to what the Browning did last week. I sure missed those tube radios......

Thanks for the show summery Sandbagger. I missed CRR again... dammit boy. Had a meeting with hurricane Matthew on the Treasure Coast for my sister's wedding. That was interesting.
Did some yard sailing after things cleared up, but no CBs were to be found. I am close to a CB shop down here near Ft Lauderdale I belive.

Classic Radio Roundup for 10/12/2016 was a little more like normal again. We had a fairly lively turnout. We can now welcome Ramrod to the fold as an official classic radio base station operator, as he had recently purchased a Cobra 2000 and put up a base antenna. So he no longer has to sit outside in his driveway to talk with us. Ranger Rick was running a TRC-11, Mini-6, and it wasn't sounding all that bad. We heard from Jason in Quakertown, Chuck, on his Kenwood TS-850, Sparky, Skeeter, and Pete gating with his Metrotek Pacer. For the third week in a row, it's tubes for me, as I opted for my Tram D201. Once again that superior tube receiver was pulling out all sorts of stations through a reduced white noise. Buffalo Bob and the Delco crew were smoking up our way as well. Missing tonight was Night Train, and 1/4 wave Dave, along with Nitro-100, who's been MIA since the late spring. Hopefully he'll be back around when the weather turns cold for good.

Fun, fun, fun...radio fun for everyone. I don't recall that I cheated and ran a '77 Yaesu FT-101EE/ FL-1200B combo that is posted on this very server. The CRR live-chat IT department did redeem itself and found operator Ranger the approved Turner Road King 56 mic to Cobra 4 pin mic color code Red wire & Shield to pin 1 White wire to pin 2 Blue wire to pin 3 Black wire to pin 4 *Yellow wire not used

Well I don't know if it was conditions last night. Or SpitFire had his foot on the gas last night. But he made a good trip to Delaware County 6 S-units. He is what we call ( The Power) best I ever hear Pete down my way on AM. I had to jump out early myself but I ran a Browning Mk3 with a 2 transistor 2879's FatBoy with the stock Banana microphone. I hear some other people in the CRR but was able to tell who they where but hats off to you guys sounded good down my way. On my end it was light till later when Rick, Renegade, Copycat, and One Eye Jack came in on the channel. Maybe catch you some of you guys tonight on the SSB CRR CH16 LSB & 8pm.

I don't know if my local ambient noise level was that much higher or whether the receiver in my Midland is that much noisier than the tube rigs I ran the previous 3 weeks, but I had a hard time hearing the Delco crew. When Pete was talking to you, all I could discern above the noise was the ping of your Browning. I couldn't copy any degree of voice though. I spent most of the night with my beam pointed NE so I could hear 101 in Allentown, and it also knocks down my noise level by 1 S-unit.

Well, The frost is really on the pumpkin after last night's sub freezing temperature. And that means TUBES tonight for Classic Radio Roundup. Radios up for consideration include my Sonar FS-23, Tram Titan, and Tram Titan IIA. We'll see which one I choose tonight. It's also about time to start theme nights again. Once the regular participation rates return from their summer doldrums, we'll revisit our list of potential themes.

Well, 10/26's CRR went off without a hitch. The skip noise was non-existent, which made for some enhanced local conditions. The Delco guys were in there in fine style, although due to my local electrical noise, I could only hear Buffalo Bob and Scooby Doo well enough to have a conversation with. Speaking of distant contacts, we also heard from 101 in Allentown, who got his Sears SSB Road Talker up and running, and now has an "official" classic radio. Turnout from the local area was decent, with Night Train finally showing up, along with a brief hello from Skeeter. Sparky, Slammin' Sam, Rooster, Grease Monkey, Byte Buster, 1/4 wave Dave, Chuck, Ramrod, Stray Cat, Security, and Ranger were among the participants. Pete, as usual, gated the event, but had some microphone issues forcing a radio change. I made the choice to run my Sonar FS-23. Because this radio seems to emphasize the high frequency end of the audio spectrum, it makes the D-104 mic sound too "bright". So I opted to run the Turner Super Sidekick to give a better balance. Toward the end of the roundup, I switched over to the "Hi-Fi" Galaxy just to blow the cobwebs off of it.

I ran the Regency Imperial with stock mic. The AM carrier is low on that rig by design so it's tough to properly key my regular amps. I have a (3) pill box tuned for low dead key (1.5 watts) that I need to try on that radio next time.

11/2/2016's edition of Classic Radio Roundup looked to be lively and reflective of the changing of the seasons, as activity seems to be on the upswing. Conditions were good for longer distance local coms, as no skip noise was observed anywhere. The Delco guys were booming up to our area, and we were even able to copy NoStreak on his Browning, although his signal seemed to have a lot of multi-path flutter in it. There may be some large objects in-between us, or the polarity of his beam, might be contributing factors. In our area, we had Ramrod, Sparky, Night Train, Slammin' Sam, Pete, Skeeter, Rooster and myself. Slammin' Sam introduced his daughter to us, and Pete came up with "Ink Spot" for a handle for her. We also helped Rooster make a couple of adjustments to a President Washington he had just picked up, and who's carrier was set at 7 watts and the modulation was suffering as a result. Because of the warm weather, I went back to solid state last night, and chose the Cobra 139XLR

Had lots of fun last night stirring the pot a bit on CRR. I was running my JC Penny Technology 6221 40 Channel Transceiver Scanner. One nice feature, among many, is that it is factory wired for Cobra 4 pin mics. Other goodies are continuously variable Fine Tune and RF Gain. The squelch switches very quietly. And yes it was a " barefoot" radio.... until I plugged it into stuff

Well, last week's roundup was a bit thin, so hopefully this week's (11/16) CRR will be a bit more lively. I have one more tube rig to run through the rotation and I'll see how that goes.

A big shout-out thanks to Pete and Sparky for helping to keep the Roundup from being a complete snooze-fest. Yep, this week was another lighter than normal turnout. Even the Delco crew was on the light side with only Renegade checking in. We had about 8 or so people check in at various point during the night. I'm battling a head cold, and wasn't in the mood to get into deep discussions, so the banter was light, although Pete was diving into a Demco SUPER Satellite which he finally got to be stable again after finding two weak tubes. Now he just has to get the hum out of the transmit audio and there's another fine CRR candidate. I had the choice of running either my Tram Titan, or the Hy-Gain 623. Due to the aforementioned head cold, I didn't feel like digging in the closet for the Tram, so I grabbed the easily accessible Hy-Gain instead.

Sorry I missed it myself, but I had to work a double shift so was unable to be in there to Roundup the Delco CRR Crew for last night. I wanted to run my SBE Console II the older version 15watts pep on SSB I just acquired. But will be home tonight for the SSB CRR edition @8pm. So maybe hear some of you guys in there tonight.

I ran a Unimetrics Porpoise-I 23 Channel base station. It has some nice features like continuously tunable fine-tune. It also has weather band with a separate VHF antenna jack. The stock mic is married to the radio and has a matching transformer inside the mic. Audio was a bit thin with this set up. I believe the Unimetrics line of CBs was aimed at the nautical crowd.

Most of those chassis lacked the extra pre-amp stage that can give a stock mic a little extra kick when they're set up right. But these Cybernet rigs really need a pre-amp mic to wake them up.

Looks like tonight's (11/30) CRR might have an informal theme associated with it. Looks like we're going to try "3 Knob Radio" and/or "Stock mic" night. Pete's going to run his Midland 13-863, and I'm not sure which radio I'm going to run yet, but I'll figure it out at the time......

Well, last night's (11/30) CRR proves that you can never really predict just what lies in store for us on any given Wednesday night. The last few weeks have been quiet with no skip and fairly good conditions to further out local areas. Pete and I had decided on an informal combination theme of Stock mic's and 3-knob radios. He was running a Midland 13-863 base, so I came up with a Midland 13-862 mobile. Well, wouldn't you know it, but the Murphy gods (not to be confused with "706" Mr. Murphy out of Illinois) decided to give us some skip to the right places for the first time in ages. So here we are with anemic audio stock mics, trying to hold conversations with Night Ranger in South Carolina. Also heard No Streak better on NR's gate in South Carolina, than we usually hear him direct. Also heard White Tail in North West Pa. there shouting on NR's gate briefly, but he's too far away to make the trip to us directly and too close for skip. But he was sounding good in there for that short moment in South Carolina. That antenna works great for skywave. Eventually the skip faded out and we were able to hear Cap't Barry all the way from Cecil County in Maryland. The local check-ins were too numerous to list (much less remember all of them). After 9:00, I switched from the stock mic to the D-104. Unfortunately, that mic sounded far too bright and tinny on that '862 Midland, so I switched radios to the Realistic TRC-451 on the Echomax 2000, which is a good combo.

I had to try several different types of glue before I found one that would adhere to the radio. I think "Elmers Glue All" is the one that finally worked. Krazy Glue and Gorilla Glue failed to take hold. Night Ranger

It was in a junk box of "parts radios" that my Father-In-Law picked up back in the 90's. It sat in my parts bins for several years after that. When I started waxing nostalgic for classic radios, especially those owned by myself and friends back in the "glory days" of the 70's, that Midland became interesting, as that model was owned by 2 operators just half a block down the street from me. So I pulled it out of the junk box and cleaned it up and got it working again. Unfortunately, I never had the trim plate. I wondered why someone would go to the trouble of prying it off, as I've done others and it's not often easy to do or accomplished without marring the trim or radio in some way. But based on what you've said, I'm guessing it just fell off due to bad glue. I wish I still had it, as I'd like to have radios that are cosmetically clean, as well as functional.

Well I tried last night to make it up you guys but that wasn't happening last night at all. Between noise and skip and trying to as hard as my little station could it just wasn't in the cards! But I listened to Night Rangers gate and you guys sounded good meaning Sandbagger and SpitFire 411 that's really all I could copy from the gate. But one good thing is there is always next week, I will try again then maybe better luck.
