Another curiosity. That Midland has the PA/EXT CB switch on the top panel. Mine has the hole for the switch but no switch (The PA is on the squelch knob). The one's I saw back in '74 didn't have the switch either. I guess they had a slightly different version. Earlier or later? Or just "different"? Oh the strange quirks in the CB radio business.

This is my Midland 77-830 40 channel with the plate re-glued. It came with two owner's manuals, the original microphone, and no mounting bracket. I home brewed a new mounting bracket for it. The mic element was dead. As a matter of fact I think the pll02a died on this one shortly after I got it. Fortunately I found new old stock PLL02a chips somewhere online and repaired it. It works fine now. That is the first time I have seen the actual PLL02a chip go bad. www.shadowstorm.com/images/Midland-77-830.JPGNight Ranger

That top plate on those "up facing" Midland radios is bad about coming unglued as it ages. My Midland 77-830 did the same thing. Alot of glues won't stick to that either. I had to try several different types of glue before I found one that would adhere to the radio. I think "Elmers Glue All" is the one that finally worked. Krazy Glue and Gorilla Glue failed to take hold. Night Ranger Strange story about how I managed to get that Midland. It was in a junk box of "parts radios" that my Father-In-Law picked up back in the 90's. It sat in my parts bins for several years after that. When I started waxing nostalgic for classic radios, especially those owned by myself and friends back in the "glory days" of the 70's, that Midland became interesting, as that model was owned by 2 operators just half a block down the street from me. So I pulled it out of the junk box and cleaned it up and got it working again. Unfortunately, I never had the trim plate. I wondered why someone would go to the trouble of prying it off, as I've done others and it's not often easy to do or accomplished without marring the trim or radio in some way. But based on what you've said, I'm guessing it just fell off due to bad glue. I wish I still had it, as I'd like to have radios that are cosmetically clean, as well as functional. Here is another Midland 77-830 with the faceplate unglued. www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1977-Midland-CB-Radio-With-Mic-And-Wiring-Harness-/262742893855?hash=item3d2cb2651f:g:YYoAAOSwnbZYE2olNight Ranger

Back then there was no internet to access tech notes or data sheets, so the local techs were pretty much flying blind. The early 3 crystal PLL-02a chassis used the top 6 control pins and topped out at channel 27 (all 1's). At the time I wasn't aware that pins 7 & 8 were also control pins, or I could have gotten it to go further up. But it has a ton of channels below channel 1. The guy who owned that radio was very trusting, but he also got the benefit of the extra channels when I was done.

Well, last night's (11/30) CRR proves that you can never really predict just what lies in store for us on any given Wednesday night. The last few weeks have been quiet with no skip and fairly good conditions to further out local areas. Pete and I had decided on an informal combination theme of Stock mic's and 3-knob radios. He was running a Midland 13-863 base, so I came up with a Midland 13-862 mobile. Well, wouldn't you know it, but the Murphy gods (not to be confused with "706" Mr. Murphy out of Illinois) decided to give us some skip to the right places for the first time in ages. So here we are with anemic audio stock mics, trying to hold conversations with Night Ranger in South Carolina. Also heard No Streak better on NR's gate in South Carolina, than we usually hear him direct. Also heard White Tail in North West Pa. there shouting on NR's gate briefly, but he's too far away to make the trip to us directly and too close for skip. But he was sounding good in there for that short moment in South Carolina. That antenna works great for skywave. Eventually the skip faded out and we were able to hear Cap't Barry all the way from Cecil County in Maryland. The local check-ins were too numerous to list (much less remember all of them). After 9:00, I switched from the stock mic to the D-104. Unfortunately, that mic sounded far too bright and tinny on that '862 Midland, so I switched radios to the Realistic TRC-451 on the Echomax 2000, which is a good combo. Yeh sandbagger, you never know what the conditions will be and who you will hear. I was glad to make Night rangers video gate in there briefly. It looks like NR just got up and left the room just before my transmission came across. I been trying for you guys for weeks now, but like you said too far away for direct and too close for skip. So from now on I will try to make contact with Night Ranger, and hopefully try to get checked in when conditions happen. We will try tomorrow eve. I made more skip contacts then local lately, Yes the antenna works great for skip conditions.

Those are the most fun when CRR is in there as we get a ton of fans checking in from all over the eastern half of the country. Hopefully we'll have some decent conditions tomorrow for the roundup. But this time, I won't be running a stock mic and 3 knob radio. Might be a good time for the Browning...

Well, today's Roundup falls on December 7th (A day which will live in infamy). So in remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the theme for tonight's CRR is American-made radios. Browning, Early Tram, Demco, Sonar, Polycom, Utica, Metrotek etc. made-in-USA radios. If you are lucky enough to have a CPI, we'll welcome those as well. All of those Cybernet, Uniden, Toshiba, NDI, GRE, and even the Panasonic chassis tube rigs will get a break tonight. Most likely I'll run my MK III as it fits the theme, plus I'm hopeful the E-skip conditions will be in there again, and the punch of the Browning sure beats an anemic stock mic......

Well I had to work, but I did catch SpitFire, and Sparky in there. Something about how SpitFire's elevation and something about handhelds and running barefoot base station. Only caught a little of the action on my Cobra 38wxst from the rooftop 100ft up high. But whatever SpitFire was running it was doing the job. Hopefully I will be able to listen to the gate and get the 411 from last night.

A failed radio mod right before the show put me in a sour mood so I just listened in Had a US made Mark III near by so I ran that instead. It was indeed a very good turnout. Earlier in the day, Sandbagger and I shared some DX with operator 169 in Maine near the Canadian border. He was running his browning R27/S23 combo. 169 mentioned he knew one of the original engineers from browning labs. 169 sold off a bunch of browning promotional stuff he obtained to one of the guys that still sells some these items. Maybe even someone who is on the forum? Hope 169 joins us here someday

No conditions to South Carolina yesterday evening. Figures i had the video ready to record. It was like someone turned off a switch up here at 7pm. We will try again next week.

We usually get a blast of E-Skip in the December-January time frame. Enjoy it when it pops up, because we won't get much again until the May-June timeframe, except for one or two times here or there due to some atmospheric anomaly. Hopefully we'll have some next Wednesday night.

I enjoyed listening to the CRR recording. interesting conversation about base antennas and I even learned a bit as well. Then it got heated with the barefoot topic. Good thing you had your FR suit on spitfire. Iam with that guy that said bare foot is whatever fits in the case! Good video guys.

I heard you guys in there last night which was great. Low noise floor on the V-Quad I could hear Sparky, SpitFire and Sandbagger! I tried to put the call out to you guys but wasn't running any power so I fell short of reaching ya! But sounds like you had a good crowd in there last night. It was kinda light on are end down here in Delco.

How is this for a Classic Radio Roundup theme.... Itty bitty teeny weeny meter night. This is for radios with itty bitty little RF/signal meters that you need a magnifying class to look at. Radios such as the Kraco KCB-2310/KCB-4010, RCA Co-Pilot 14T260, and Hygain 1 and 2 come to mind. I think there were also some Pace and Sharp mobile radios with itty bitty teeny weeny meters as well. Kraco KCB-2310b Hy-Gain Hy-Range 2 Pace CB-142 I'm sure there are others. Night Ranger

I don't have any working classics with the "half inch" meter. The smallest meters I have are those standard Uniden, TRC451 size units. I have a 40 channel Kraco with the tiny meter, but that was stripped of the audio amp, the final and driver, and then re-purposed as a digital PLL VFO for the 37 Mhz crystal SBE Trinidad that I wanted to get up on channel 29, when that used to be our home channel back when I lived at my old place. So that won't be usable. I have radios with no meter, tiny 4 segment LED meters, but no "half inchers". I might have one in my junk box down in the basement. But most likely they won't work......

Ran the Sears 23 PLL "mini-meter" rig for CRR. It's similar in size to it's predecessor, the Sears 23 without a meter. It got out pretty well and the little meter actually worked. (had to get out the magnifying glass to confirm)
