Well, the last laptop died several months back after being up for the last 5 years. The replacement didn't fare so well, as it fails to see the hard drive now after just a few months of active duty. Yes, I do have extra laptop hard drives, and I have another whole laptop if necessary. But it will take a while if I can't recover the config files and I have to rebuild everything from scratch. Apologies to those who like to listen into the server to hear the goings on in the CRR area.......

As it happens dang it!

My shadowstorm.com web server, dns server, and email server is also down at the moment. A storm came through and landed a large tree limb across the power lines. Two lines are down, the power is out, and the tree limb is hanging from a lower third power line. Shadowstorm.com will return once my power is restored. Night Ranger

Is it a bad drive? Unless it's seeking constantly, which would me the controller board is shot.
You can usually recover the data even on a bad drive.

Well, the good news is that after letting the laptop sit off for a couple of days, I fired it up and it booted up normally. That makes me think it's some sort of heat related failure. But while I'm able to fire it up, I'll copy all the pertinent data off of it, before it shuts down again.

You would be amazed at how much dust clogs a laptop's cooing system over time: Haha, I just tried to get at my fan in my Sony Vaio laptop. 20 screws out of the bottom, hard and DVD drive out and I said bag it. You have to then take the top speaker grill and speakers out, then the key board and then LCD screen but yet another 15 screws to get the top trim plate off with multiple ribbon cables after that. Maybe by then you see the fan, sheash Why not just take a powerful shop vac to the exterior heat sink exhaust ports and listen to that internal fan go woosh...

Coincidentally, my laptop is a Dell, just not that exact model, but I'm sure it's constructed similarly.....

I've switched all of my servers over to SSD devices.

It figures that my Dell is not nearly as user friendly as the one in the video. I've had to take out a dozen screws already and the case is still not separating cleanly. There must be a hidden screw or some other snap that I have to get around. The fan seems to turn freely but when the computer is on, it just jerks back and forth, and doesn't run. Don't know if it's a bad fan or a bad voltage feeding it. I'll know more when I dig into it again, when I get a free slice of time.

My bet would be bad fan. I've replaced more fans from Dells. But also keep in mind most of the fans I've replaced were on systems that were at least 5 to 6 years old.

I gave up trying to cleanly filet my Dell laptop (I don't have a suitable fan to replace it with anyway), so I took a different track. I found another similar Dell laptop and swapped the hard drive in from the old Dell, and it seems to work. Drivers aren't exact, but it's working enough to get it back on the air. I am concerned that CPU load is quite a bit higher than it was on the old machine. Hopefully that won't mean it will crash more often (looks like it might have just done it as I was testing it). Oh well, baby steps.......

Oh well, baby steps....... Install the proper drivers first. Go here: www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Products/?app=driversEnter the service tag (or allow the dell app to run and do it for you) and you should be able to get the proper drivers for that series laptop. You can buy a Thermaltake laptop cooler: www.walmart.com/ip/34405972What version of Windows is it running?

I upped the audio bit rate a bit for a less "digital" sounding audio quality. But I also cut back on the video bit rate to keep the stream size reasonable. So the meter may look a little less sharp than it used to. Update your bookmarks, the IP address had changed: mms://75.97.117.108:81

I tried to view it as before on my android based smart phone using the VLC video app but it "cannot read the file". Tried the link from the PTD site and direct entry in VLC, still no good.
Any one else been able to view Spew again with thier android phone or tablet and if so what App was able to display it? Thanks.

It seems to work as it always has from computers. I was never able to get it to work from my tablet (not that I tried all that much) with the apps that I had. Not much should be different from before.... well, except different computer, different hard drive, different OS, different cable modem and wireless router, slightly different streaming bit rates, and different IP address. What could go wrong?

Any one else been able to view Spew again with their android phone or tablet and if so what App was able to display it? Thanks. Good news...got Spew to work on my android phone by installing " video player for android" by accountlab from the Google Play store on my Motorola Droid Turbo 2 phone running Android version 7. The app was a bit intrusive with it's permission requests so I may just temporarily force a stop or temporarily deny it's permission requests or uninstall it and just re-install it when I want to use it (which is usually when I'm out of town) It should look like this as there are many similarly named video players in the app store: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=video.player.audio.player.music&hl=enThen after installing the app, just look up "Classic Radio Round Up" in you browser first. (I use Firefox) it will be: "http://home.ptd.net/~n3cvj/lipcutters.htm" Then click on the "Spew Radio 1 live" link. It will ask you what app you want to open it with and just click on "video player for android" and in a few seconds it should come up Yippee! Thanks, Sandbagger!
