It was really cool to hear Stray Cat re-unite with Spitfire last night OTA. Stray Cat had mentioned that he may know Spitfire the other night but I forgot to relay that info. But since we're in such a "small town" they met up on the radio anyway. Maybe Stray cat will log on here sometime? I have a 16 amp power supply to donate to Stray Cat so he can get an amp hooked up & more folks can hear him locally. Meanwell Technology at work On another note, Collegeville local Aqua Man said he just picked up a minty looking Pace SideTalk base that he is having some audio issues with. Maybe he'll get on here as well. All in all a great radio night with some skip from Mr Murphy, Space lady and little Brother... let alone a host of locals. I got a nice hifi audio report from Share Cropper just running my Stryker 497 with just the Turner +2 desk mic and a hint of on board reverb. He couldn't believe I wasn't running any outboard processing. Operator 217 asked me to jot down what Share Cropper in Arkansas was using so here it is: RCI-2985 transceiver Palmtop Studio PS02 outboard effects processor www.zoom.co.jp/products/production-recording/multi-track-recorders/zoom-ps-02Audio-Technica ATR1200 mic www.audio-technica.com/cms/wired_mics/85a7dae7ec254338/Behringer mixer board (didn't catch which one, but they are typically low cost-high performance boards) www.music-group.com/Categories/Behringer/Mixers/Analog-Mixers/1002/p/P0574He definitely had that rich hifi audio, next to "full quieting" AM broadcast sound going for him

I'd have fired up the Galaxy plastic HiFi radio, and we'd have a hifi party. Some day I'd like to find a studio mic for cheap. That would make for a much flatter audio range. Are you sure 16 amps is enough to run an amp? Running my "2 pill" sized Dave Made loafing along at 35 watts carrier pretty much draws 5 amps dead key with a peak current of around 20 amps at 140 watts PEP @ 100% modulation. If he has a small amp and keeps the drive level down in the 25 watt range, it should be ok. Much more than that, and you're looking at at least a 25 amp supply to be on the safe side.

I believe it's a small one or two pill he has. Probably a 455 pill variant. He said it was called a "something" 75 so that leads me to believe that the 16 mean well should work. I fused it at 20 amps to help prevent nuisance trips and the PS has built-in overload protection anyway. If it's a 2x2879 box, then you're right & 16 amps ain't gonna do it.

Yea, a 2X MRF455 box is only good for about 130 watts peak. Therefore, you should have no more than 30 watts of dead key, so he's probably good to go with the 16 amp supply. The thing that's tough to do with those boxes is avoiding overdrive. 4 watts is actually too much drive for those amps. With 4 watts in, they tend to put out over 75-90 watts dead key, which leaves you with not enough modulation headroom, and they tend to backswing and sound fuzzy as a result. If the amp has a hi/lo switch, it needs to stay on low, and that might keep the output in the 30 watt range. If not, then the radio should be turned down to around 2 watts or less, to keep the output in the 30 watt range.

Pretty sure he's got a solid state unit. I think I would have remembered if it were a tube Wawasee unit but Mr Yuengling clouded my memory It's probably a Palomar TX 75 variant?

Amp is a Sidewinder 75. No Hi-Lo switch, built in SSB delay and surely not one of Sidewinder's products Built by "Hayden" or something like that. His powered D104 mic needed a breakdown cleaning and a good used head. Should work now on his SBE Console II as long as its still wired for a Cobra mic. I think that's the way they come from the factory. May need to turn his SBE down a bit to match the amp. We shall see or hear? Straighten that antenna and Fire It Up Stray Cat! Update, She's-A-No-Good. Amp is Toast. NEXT>

I was never a fan of the MRF455 amps, as they are just to easy to overdrive, and running them at the point of a clean signal means having to drop the radio drive power way down (or constructing an attenuator pad) and pretty much doesn't give you a major signal boost. The good news is that when they are run that way, they don't draw much current

Well at least his SBE Console II sounds really good with the refreshed D104 mic. In fact it sounds awesome. I guess only locals in the Skippack area will hear him as I could not get a feel for how much, if any, he would be willing to spend on an amp.
