Here's the placeholder for CRR info and chatter for 2017. So far I haven't decided on a theme for this week's CRR yet. I want to see what the turnout will be tomorrow night before jumping back into theme nights. I'm not sure what I'll run yet. Maybe the Tram Titan, I'll have to see.....

I want to see what the turnout will be tomorrow night before jumping back into theme nights. I'm not sure what I'll run yet. Maybe the Tram Titan, I'll have to see..... Well the first CRR for the 2017 season kicked off last night. Turnout was fairly light. Pete was once again missing as he deals with some personal issues. Sparky and I started things off, with Slammin' Sam joining shortly after. Sam had just picked up an SBE Formula D, which sounded a little anemic on the stock mic. But he put a Turner +2 desk mic on it, and that woke it up nicely. Other stations joining in were Grease Monkey, Night Train, Ranger, Security, Gumby, Chuck, Aqua Man, along with a couple of weaker distant guys that I couldn't hear all that well. I didn't hear the stronger members of the Delco crew in there, so I don't know if they were absent, or just those who don't make it over my noise level were in there. As I stated before, I did end up running my Tram Titan. Looks like I need to change the value of the feedback resistors in the modulation limiter circuit. Right now, it clamps the modulation at about 75%, which robs the radio of its full punch potential. My goal would be to allow the full 100%. But like so many other things in my "to-do" list, it'll probably sit there for many months before I actually do something about it.

Good to hear all the check-ins last night. I ran the venerable Cobra 2K. Seemed to work well so I ran it all evening.

It's time once again for Classic Radio Roundup. I'm not sure which direction I'll be heading in the radio department, but I'm probably leaning in the tube direction. Maybe the Comstat 25, or maybe my Sonar FS-23 or........... Yea, I guess you'll have to tune in to find out.....

Our 2nd CRR for 2017 was a pretty active affair. Slammin' Sam, Rooster, Sparky, Ranger, Ramrod, Skeeter, Stray Cat, and Grease Monkey started things off, and we went from there. Other stations heard were Gumby, Scooby Doo, Chuck. Several vintage classic rigs were represented, including Rangers's Pearce Simpson Lynx, Sparky's, and Skeeter's Browning MK III, Slammin' Sam's SBE Formula D and Ramrod's Cobra 2000. I decided to run my Sonar FS-23 and a Turner +3.

I was impressed with the turnout for CRR with many classic CB radios working the airwaves. Conversations were especially whimsical and light. I had a few good belly laughs that's for sure. Sorry, I couldn't refuse the "what's wrong with my browning radio?" skit again. I know it gets old, but is hard to deflect when another operator brings it up

It's Wednesday again (wow time is flying, even for the winter) and time for CRR. I was sitting here thinking about which radio I haven't run in a little while, and I thought about my Realistic TRC-30A. But In order to use it with anything other than a rather anemic sounding stock mic, I need to make a new mic adapter (I cannibalized my last one for the mobile rig). So here's this week's thought to ponder...... I need a 5 pin DIN plug to make the new adapter, so where do you think the easiest place would be to get one (Hint - TRC-30A)? If you guessed Radio Shack you would be......... WRONG! Yesterday at lunch, I took a trip over to the local 'Shack to grab a new mic plug. Well, they have their remaining stock of parts squirreled away in roll drawer bins. And there is a nicely marked drawer with CB and ham radio connectors. Inside there were spaces for standard 4 pin and 8 pin mic plugs, but nothing.... NOTHING! for the 5 pin DIN. The mic plug that mates to the majority of Radio Shack CB radios ever made in the last 45+ years and they don't even have a space marked for them? Bizarre! Maybe it's just this particular Radio Shack store. I'll have to try one near where I live and see what they have. In the meantime I'll have to re-cannibalize the old plug so I can get the radio ready for tonight's CRR......

I've got an extra 5 pin DIN mic connector. I'll PM ya and maybe we could meet at the Wawa later on your way home.
Not sure what radio I'll run, maybe the RS also.

That one I don't run on CRR. The other one I have was a $10 E-Bay purchase, and it's in fairly good condition, although I think it's starting to suffer from drying out electrolytic caps. I do run that on CRR once in a while, although it has been a while since the last time I ran it.

1/18's CRR was a fairly lightly attended event. The Delco crew seemed conspicuously absent (or running very low power), even though conditions seemed quiet. Slammin' Sam debuted yet another radio he picked up, in a Sears 23 (and later a Realistic mini 23), Sparky and I both ran Realistic TRC-30a's. Pete finally returned to the fold running his SBE Trinidad. Skeeter was running his old faithful Browning. Others heard were Ranger, 1/4 wave Dave, Gumby, Night Train, Ramrod and others. The unofficial theme was Realistics, but only Sparky and I followed it....

CRR will be up and running tonight like every week. This week I picked a random radio to run, a Regency Formula 23, which I've been working on the receiver.

1/26/2017's CRR was somewhat underwhelming, which underscores the notion that you never know what you might get from week to week. Pete was once again absent, as was Sparky. Thankfully Skeeter hung in there and him and I along with Slammin' Sam and Ranger tried to keep things going. Delco represented via Renegade, and there were a few others down in their area. We had Grease Monkey, Stray Cat, and Gumby to add to the turnout up in our neck of the woods. As I mentioned before I ran my Regency Formula 23, which I had been experimenting with the FET front end, trying to up the sensitivity. I think the radio is working fairly well as I could hear the weaker stations fairly decently. I think the noise level was also down, which helps. There was a trace of what might have been skip in there, but it never rose above a trace and then faded out again. I also had the company of my Radio Cat, who likes to sit in the guest chair while CRR goes on.

I like the radio cat. My cat sometimes sits in my desk chair when I'm on the radio also. Its used to the sound of heterodyne.

I got Florida and Mississippi last night. Mild turn out for us Delco Boys. We had 4 on the air. We ended up going back to 27.1350 so as not to interfere with classic round up. Skip was fading in and out until about 9:30.

2/01's CRR was a bit livelier than the previous week. Pete and Sparky returned and kept things going. The Delco crew (and Cap't Barry in MD) were all heard in there in fine style (although not at my location ) Others heard were Slammin' Sam, Ranger, Stray Cat, Lug Nut and Grease Monkey. Lot's of time was spent on the topic of tube radio repair 1-0-1, as Pete is having some issues with a radio he's trying to get working again. Yes, the scope is your friend...... I haven't run my Royce 1-640 in a while and I was reminded why I don't run it all that much. I just don't like the receive on it. On the bench it is super sensitive, being able to hear a signal down to .1uV. But for whatever reason, when the antenna is attached, it seems to receive an inordinate amount of noise. With the beam pointed toward Delco, I had a steady S7 noise level. Granted, the S-meter linearity on this rig is not the best, and it indicates signal before it probably should, and that may be a big part of the problem - it only looks like a lot of noise. But I could not hear anyone from the Delco area besides Renegade. When I switched to my second half rig, the TRC-465, I could make out bits and pieces of Cap't Barry, so the receiver seemed "quieter" on that rig. But it just goes to show that perception is often greater than reality.

I always run my RF gain back on mine because of the highly sensitive receive. And I fine the Pierce Simpson Simba is that way as well. I could hear Spitefire pretty good and couldn't really hear anyone else. But it was nice checking in to the Roundup. We went to CH 16 Am to talk the rest on the night. Between the train coming by and Buffalo Bob blasting up that way so good we felt it was time to head to CH16. But I'm glad you put the Royce 640 in service and gave it some airtime last night! Myself I ran a Pearce Simpson Simba and a Firebird 500 on a StarDuster antenna going total retro!

Not much to see here... I ran a browning Mark III set that I had sitting on their sides without the casings and bottoms. This was for testing purposes so I could see where, if any, magic smoke came out. So far so good.

Hey Bagger I was listening to Pete's video gate and heard your Royce I-640 it sounded great. I'm going to run mine this weeks CRR and see it I can hear you guys alittle better. I kinda roll back the RF gain to drop the high noise level. If you drop out the AGC it really gets noisey. Sparky's barn door Browning Mk 3 sounded good. The Ping could use some help but the audio sounded good. Hope to hear you guys this week I'll keep my good ear to the speaker and listen for ya! 73's No Streak

It's very likely that either 'ol Zero-Five or one of his detractors was on the key when that pic was snapped. Yea, the Royce talks well, and has great modulation. I just hate the receive, it's far too noisy. Much like my Galaxy 2547. Yea, you can roll the RF gain back to knock the noise down, and I do that with the Spew Radio 640. But while you knock the noise down, you're also killing the sensitivity. I have other radios that are just as sensitive (Tram, Browning etc.), but not nearly as noisy, even with the RF gain at maximum.

NIGHT RANGER!!!! This week I was unable to sit in and listen for any CRR talk. But here is the story. My Girlfriend 574 knows how difficult it is to get on the roundup from this area, unless there is conditions, to South Carolina. She was home last evening and turned on the radio and herd some skip from Florida, so she gave it a shot, Thinking quickly she turned on the gopro just in case that maybe Night Ranger may be listening. Well she called for him and I believe he was on ch 12 and herd bleedover on 13, so he came up on 13 to listen. (hopefully he can confirm that part) She called again and made contact with him. There were a few transmissions made by eachother that can clearly be herd on the video. Go figure the one night that Iam not around I missed it. She was so happy she called me and told me the news, I couldnt believe it!! Then told me that she recorded it, at this point I couldnt wait to get home and listen to the video. Please check out the video below. A good night it was. Please excuse the video quality, 574 rarely talks on the cb radio, thinking fast she reacted and did this for me, knowing how important it meant to me!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_TLfmvQaoY958 whitetail, NW Pennsylvania

I was listening in from Virginia in the mobile heading North, but only heard the guys from Georgia & Florida talking skip. They were talking to some folks in PA on other channels. Once I got back in the area later that evening, I was able to speak to Knight Train on my Stryker SR-497HPC while I was on 476 N near Broomal,PA. Never heard him from that far away so that new Sirio base antenna was working for him. He was talking to Roust-A-Bout in Delaware City. Got to say Hi to 44 and Hawkeye before I pulled in the driveway then it was lights out after a 14 hour day We like girls on CB Radio!
