Another fine turnout for CRR 5/10/17. Sounded like the old days I ran my Trashy Tram XL. Nice receive for such a compact radio. Welcome new on air participant "K-1" (K One) referred to the show by Ranger.

Looking forward to tonight's CRR. I have some interesting tests I want to try out. And we'll get to play "Guess what radio "Bagger's running"..... It may not be as easy as you think.......

Don't think I'll make it. Today is our 20th wedding anniversary and wandering off to talk on the radio is probably not in my best interest. In my absence perhaps some discussion about a possible meet/coffee break?

Well, CRR didn't go off as planned. I was held up for nearly an hour, and when I finally got in there, There was a bunch of skip (But no Night Ranger or any of the usual guys we talk to when the E-Skip rolls). Pete and Sparky were both absent, although Sparky showed up about a 1/2 hour later. I wanted to debut my newly HiFi modified Washington and see if I could fool people into thinking it was my HiFi Galaxy 2547. Skeeter initially thought it was the 2547. Sparky thought it was my Hy-Gain 623, but then guessed the Washington (probably because he knew I was fooling around with the audio on it). I will write up a dissertation in the HiFi section with more detail what I did to it. It took a little work, but I'm really starting to like the sound of this radio. Wrench was running his newly acquired TRC55, and it was sounding good. We also had Ranger, Gumby, and the Delco Boys in there for a bit as well.

Yes the Washington's audio did sound wide banded Nice job! Could you tell if it was flat topping at all with a scope? It seemed a slight bit edgier than the Galaxy. Maybe just a tad more THD?

Yes the Washington's audio did sound wide banded Nice job! Could you tell if it was flat topping at all with a scope? It seemed a slight bit edgier than the Galaxy. Maybe just a tad more THD? Well, that could be simply the mic gain setting, and ultimately the amount of modulation limiting. The Galaxy, I have set to 100% on the nose, and the Washington may have exceeded that level by a small amount. It didn't sound "edgy" in my monitor, but I can back the mic gain down a tad and see if that makes a difference. It may also have to do with the lack of an EQ. I usually pull back on the 500-2500hz area because the D104 and Echomax mics are enhanced in that range and the EQ tends to flatten it out a bit. The Washington is pretty flat across the board, so I would need to feed it with a fairly flat response microphone. I liked the sound of my slightly modified Kenwood MC-85 with it. So next CRR, I will give that a run and see what you guys think....

Wow! Time flies quickly and here we are at the cusp of yet another Classic Radio Roundup. Not sure what to expect tonight, conditions-wise, but I would imagine there's a good chance of some E-Skip propagation in there for at least some of the time. Depending on turnout and conditions, I may (or may not) do a "Battle of the HiFi radios" shootout, to see which one of my HiFi monsters actually sounds the best, on a given microphone. The Galaxy has the advantage of the EQ, but to make things fair, I'll set all the controls for flat response. And it will be "Radio A" vs. "Radio B", so no preconceived prejudices . I have my doubts that Pete will show up, as I think he may be on vacation, so I'll probably 'gate Spew Radio so we'll have something.

Hi there! came across this site..cool! some people still hang out on CB..I started in the 70's.. waxing nostolgic lately...had various radios thru my life...still have my newly purchased in the olde' days Tram Diamond 60! with minor mods, that radio can really talk...very well built for the time, I must say...the squelch in that radio is phenomenal...most squelches are basically an on off switch! I want to slow down the AGC a bit so it is not as compressed sounding on rx...have Motorola Micom radios for SSB, and recently acquired a Hy Gain 623...totally stripped down, chemically washed ckt board, did some parts re-arranging to make it look neater...got rid of the wacky power plug and associated rats nest of wiring, and installed a industry standard IEC socket (computer cord for the masses) no more 12 v capability , buy hey it's 2017 and I don' think anybody needs a radio in the car that idles at 4 amps! I'm in northern NJ maybe can hear you guys sometime...I'm an RF engineer in the television industry working in Manhattan...see what cb radio turned me in to Save

Just wanted to jump in and say hello from Pottstown (Halfway House) I go by 142/Grunt. My setup is a cobra 142 barefoot on an Antron-99 mounted on the second floor overhang in disguise from the HOA antenna laws. :-)
I used to be on the CB down in Delco in the 80's and ran by the name Dr.Shock, had a moonraker and RadioShack base station. I decided to jump back on the original social network!

But he was in Wayne and he was known for "knockin' down trees" and "bustin' up concrete" while he was "on the move" Anyway, welcome to the forum and since you're a neighbor, give us all a yell on Wednesday nights on the Roundup.

Johnson made some very good performing CB radios. They weren't big into SSB though. By the time they offered up a SSB rig, it was "farmed out" to a Japanese manufacturer.

Well, I was wrong about Pete, as he was in there, but I think he might have been working on something, as he was not as talkative as usual. I was also wrong about the skip, as it was dead quiet at the beginning of the roundup. But a little "Puertomexicuban" stuff did make a brief appearance a little while later. Fortunately it was not strong enough to overcome the back rejection of my beam, so you won't hear it on my 'gate. I set up my 2 HiFi radios on an A/B switch and switched back and forth many times during the night. They seemed very close in audio quality. But, as Night Train pointed out, it's tough to judge the depth of a HiFi transmitter when you're listening through a bandwidth limited receiver. Shame Pete wasn't running his Hallicrafters receiver. That really brings out the best in a HiFi setup. I guess I'm done playing in that sandbox for a while. I'm happy how the Washington turned out. So I guess I'll button it back up and enjoy it for what it is. Any ideas for a theme for next week's CRR? Throw a couple out and I'll put them up for a vote.

Everyone throw on their favorite pair of shorts and flip flops/sandals, grab a cold beverage of choice, and maybe put on some Beach Boys in the background. Yeah, I know it's not radio related, but that's all I got.

Well, Classic Radio Roundup was a bit "livelier" than typical this past Wednesday (6/7). The summer "E"-skip was in full swing, making local conditions rougher than usual. I had to have my foot firmly on the gas for most of the night just to be heard. It figured too, as I had just picked up another radio to add to the collection. This one was a gift from Two Watt Willy, a Midland 13-879 with a stock mic. Not the best radio to be running with heavy skip running. The Midland needed a bit of work. The receiver was really weak (2.5uV), and the transmit was running at about 2 watts with backswing. Thankfully the receiver anemia was not difficult this time. Looks like someone replaced the front end transistor with an RCA "SK" replacement that really wasn't meant for this application. Replacing that with a more suitable part brought the sensitivity up to .1uV. A quick alignment got the transmitter up to 3 watts, but still backswinging. I suspect the power supply has a lot to do with it, as the lights were dimming pretty bad when modulating. Rewiring the mic jack for the Cobra "standard" allowed me to put a D104 on it so I could make it through the slowly building skip. Eventually the skip got so bad that I had to switch to the Washington to maintain communication. But the Midland will make another appearance at a later time, hopefully the power supply and transmit issues will be taken care of. Also, another bit of bad news, the Spew Radio computer up and died again. I was in the middle of 'gating the roundup when the hard drive started making loud clunking noises, which is never a good sign. After a couple of minutes of that, I got the infamous blue screen of death, and that was that. I'm guessing another hard drive will attend a quick burial at sea. Speaking of bad news, we learned of the passing of Little Brother in Tennessee, courtesy of Space Lady, both of whom we often communicate with when the skip rolls that way. The Classic Radio crew will miss his presence. But the big story on Action News, was that our very own Sparky (BBB) has a "fan" out there in skip land. And when I say fan, I really mean heckler. Evidently this person thinks Sparky is a "Gay Space monkey" (whatever that is). Don't know what that's all about. But evidently it has something to do with Mr. Murphy (706), out of St. Louis, who we also talk to when conditions are right. Apparently, Mr. Murphy wasn't liked by this person, and his ire extended to anyone who talked with him. Also, we learned that Mr. Murphy supposedly moved to Arizona. That might explain why we hadn't heard him in a while. But this heckling knucklehead was all up in Sparky's business. But we didn't seem to know why. Oh, well, you never know what you might hear on any given Wednesday night..... Rumors circulated that Night Ranger might have been in there trying to make the trip, but I guess the pipeline between SE PA, and SC just wasn't there.

The heckler was quick to pick up just about anything we spoke about. Nice to know I was plugging up "it's receive Letting "it" know I have a happy family full of kids and loving wife still didn't silence "it". I came back in later that night and the southern heckler gang was definitively fixated and focused on "gay" things. Not that there's anything wrong with that... Oh well, I'll have to let my wife know I was putting-out on the browning Mark III Wednesday night, haha.
